"The Vampire Diaries" season 5 continued Thursday, Oct. 17, with episode 3, "Original Sin," and Stefan was hungry after all those months trapped and drowning. But once he got some blood in him, he was in for a surprise while Elena, Damon, and Katherine road-tripped to find him and Matt had problems of his own.
History lesson time! Before going into everything that happened in the present in this week's "TVD," let's go back 2000 years to Ancient Greece. Yes, that's right. Let's see what Silas was like before and right after he became immortal. He was in love, and he was going to get married, only, he was in love with one girl and marrying another. Yes, Silas was in love, and they were the two most powerful members of the Travelers, and they wanted to find a way for their love to last forever. But Silas had just convinced Qetsiyah he loved her so she'd make the immortality spell, and the night of their wedding, she discovered he's already taken it with another. Silas was her true love, but she was not his. His true love was Amara, Qetsiyah's handmaiden, and yes, she was another Elena doppelganger. Qetsiyah murdered Amara, but she did offer Silas a second chance. Well, her version of a second chance, at least, which consisted of Amara's heart in a chalice, and the cure. She had already used one cure on Amara to kill her, and when Silas refused, she had hoped he'd take the cure in the tomb so she could trap him in the supernatural limbo.
Meet Tessa. She's a bit crazy, controlling, paranoid, in desperate need of a friend, has trust issues, and has been dead for 2000 years. Yes, Tessa was Qetsiyah, and she had used the chance when the veil was down to give herself a body. She was also the one who rescued Stefan from his drowning marathon—well, had someone rescue him—and had brought him in when he was burning outside without his daylight ring. She claimed to be making him a new one so he could help her take down Silas once and for all, but she was really getting a spell ready to ink Stefan and Silas together to weaken the latter and take away his mental powers so they could defeat him. She had expected Damon to have Katherine with him when he showed up to rescue his brother. Yes, she had been the one who planted those dreams.
Did the love triangle ever stand a chance? Tessa explained to Stefan that Silas and Amara were just the first versions of Stefan and Elena. So it sounded like Katherine may have been right about why she and Elena were dreaming about him, as she suggested on their road trip (and Katherine was stuck in the backseat despite complaining about getting carsick) that there was still a connection and maybe Elena knew he was her one true love. After Tessa's spell worked, Stefan collapsed, and while he was unconscious, she suggested Damon just leave him with her so he could go back to being happy with Elena. She had watched versions of Stefan and Elena find each other, conquer all, and fall in love, over and over again. Destiny had been trying to get the doppelgangers together forever, she explained, and the universe was working against both Tessa and Damon. Silas had his true love, and Stefan had Elena. But Damon wasn't leaving his brother, and after he came to after Tessa knocked him out, he watched Elena try to wake his brother with no luck.
About that cure… No, talk of the cure wasn't quite over yet, not with Katherine still alive, but we did find out why Silas wanted her in this episode. Nadia hunted Katherine down, snapping Elena's neck along the way (and poor, cold, human, whiny, oh-so-amusing Katherine never got her sweater), and once Tessa's spell had worked and rid Silas of his mental powers, she got away with the human. But a phone conversation cleared everything up, as Silas explained that both he and his crazy ex-fiancée wanted the cure, and it still existed. Katherine's blood was the cure.
A passenger in his body Remember how Nadia killed Gregor? Remember how they had found Matt in the alley in the premiere? Well, apparently that was in preparation for the possibility of Nadia having to prove herself to Silas, as Gregor was a passenger in Matt's body, and they were planning to make that permanent. Hold up, Matt Donovan must stay alive! Gregor wanted to know where she buried his body, but first, "Matt" needed to call Elena and find out where Katherine was. Poor Matt woke up at home, his shoes dirty, to Elena calling to let him know they found Stefan, but lost Katherine after the phone call he didn't remember from earlier. How long will he keep what's going on a secret from the others?
And tonight's big cliffhanger… Just as Elena and Damon decided to say "screw destiny and doppelgangers and fate and the universe"—and Damon pretty much won with "You are my life"—Stefan woke up not knowing who they were. Guess that's the side effect of someone burning through your mind.
