Elena was very protective of everyone in her life and Jeremy was no exception. She would do anything to keep him safe and alive. Now that he is gone they can take her to a deep and dark place. In new spoilers, she is going to actually go after a bunch of cheerleaders at a competition. She just doesn't care anymore like she used to before his death.
Elena will become carefree and not afraid to hurt people. She turns off her emotions to get over Jeremy's death and this is a side of her that fans have never seen. It doesn't sound like he will be coming back at all in season 4 or ever again.
