'The Vampire Diaries' has been renewed for a sixth season

The CW, announced earlier this week that they have decided to renew the supernatural drama, "The Vampire Diaries" for its sixth season.

The show is currently number two among its time slot among young viewers with an average of 3 million viewers. It continues to gain nominations and awards from the People's Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, Teen Icon Awards, Saturn Awards, and Young Adult Awards.

"The Vampire Diaries" is based on a series of young adult novels previously written by L.J. Banks and tells the story of Elena Gilbert and her friends in Mystic Falls, Virginia. The show centers on her love of the vampire brothers, Damon and Stefan Salvatore. Her friends also include werewolves, hybrids, witches, ghosts and more.

The show premiered in 2009 with the largest audience in The CW's history. The show stars Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Steven R. McQueen, Kat Graham, and Candice Accola. The show airs on Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. EST.

The CW also announced that "The Vampire Diaries" spinoff, "The Originals" has also been renewed for its second season.
