"The Vampire Diaries" season 5 continued Thursday, Oct. 24, with episode 4, "For Whom the Bell Tolls," and it was time for a trip down memory lane as Elena and Damon tried to help the amnesiac Stefan.
Who am I? Oh, well that's a long story. This "TVD" episode began with Stefan reading through his journals as Damon, whom he mistook to be the "safe" brother drove around, but it only took one taunt for Damon to flip over the car. He would be the "fun" brother. Elena found them drinking in the Grill and was clearly hurt that Damon hadn't told his brother anything about her yet. Stefan may not have remembered his Ripper side, but he was doing a pretty good job of a passing likeness of it when he went after the waitress in the back, so they decided to keep him clear of people. After Jeremy summoned Damon, it was up to Elena to try to trigger a memory, and that meant a trip down memory lane. He hoped her family history was happier than his (yeah, right), and the moments just kept on coming the more he learned about her and the more he complimented her. "So, bonded by death," he said once he learned about her history. Yeah, they wouldn't be getting into their bond quite yet considering he didn't even remember how they met.
Elena tried to recreate the moment they met, which only led to the awkward, cliché dance as they both moved the same way to switch positions, and then came the moment she had to teach him about being a vampire and jumping up onto the roof. They briefly talked about their relationship, and even though they weren't even together, the poor guy got the "it's not you, it's me" speech as she told him why they didn't work out. However, things took a bad turn when they visited the bridge and she stopped their almost-kiss to tell him she was with Damon. Stefan-without-his-memory wasn't exactly understanding, his hunger was back, and he bounced, jonesing for a fix.
Stefan lucked out that there was a cemetery full of people (and alcohol) around for Remembrance Day, so by the time Caroline found him, he was drunk. He was basically doing what any confused, frustrated, upset person would do, only for Stefan, it usually meant bloody hell for anyone around him. He told her she was hotter in person than the photos he had seen, blaming it on the alcohol, and when Jesse joined them (Caroline invited him to study to hopefully get closer to Dr. Maxfield to get answers, plus there was that kiss), Ripper 2.5 warned him to leave since he could tell he had a paper cut and wanted to, well, rip him. Caroline sent Jesse to hide, but Stefan found him—and really, this Stefan was fun. Caroline had to pull him off Jesse, remind him he was a better person than that, and heal her study buddy with her blood, all while apologizing. If only she knew what she had gotten him into…
When it doubt, go to the video Matt was pretty much going insane from these blackouts and not getting any emails back from Bonnie, so he set up video cameras to record himself. He woke up from a nap to find a cut on his hand and to see that his "passenger" had left him a message on camera after coming out to play after a phone call. "I am the passenger inside of you," he told Matt. "I know you have many questions, but all you need to know is that one day, my friends will come looking for this blade. Protect it at all costs." He then cut his hand. "Or this will be your throat."
Have those tissues ready… "Don't stop on my account," Bonnie told Jeremy as she watched him work out. "It's not like there's Netflix where I am. You working out is my main source of entertainment." But he couldn't be the only one to know she was dead forever, and fortunately, "TVD" didn't stretch that out any longer. With everyone depending on Bonnie to show up with the magic fix as always, people were beginning to get frustrated that she wasn't calling them back, supposedly "busy" on vacation with her mother. But it was time for the truth to come out, and first, Jeremy told Damon, who was happy to live in denial, knowing what it would do to Elena, until Jeremy said the words he didn’t want to hear: "Bonnie's dead." Even in the premiere, we saw how much Damon has come to care for Jeremy, and that came out again in this episode when he hugged the younger Gilbert.
While Jeremy went to tell Matt, who unfortunately thought he was there with happier news about Bonnie, Damon delivered the bad news to Elena, and with that, the tears began, and he was there for her while she broke down as Bonnie watched through the window. But wait, it got even more heartbreaking because then it was time to say goodbye. After Jeremy rang the bell in her honor, he delivered her message for her friends. She wasn't going anywhere, and she had something to tell each of them. She wanted Elena to go back to college, Matt to know he didn't do anything wrong and she would've emailed him back if she could have, and for Caroline… that was when Tyler finally showed up, and she could lean on her MIA boyfriend while Elena leaned on Damon. "This is good," Bonnie told Jeremy. "This is all I wanted. I'll be okay. We'll all be okay." Even they had each other, though they couldn't feel each other's hands. Poor Matt had no one. Well, except the "passenger" in his head. But it wasn't like he was going to be offering any form of comfort.
Still BFFs Stefan may not have remembered anyone, but that didn't mean we had to lose one of the best parts of the show: Stefan and Caroline's friendship. As Stefan packed up and left the Salvatore house, his journals burning in the fireplace, and Elena and Damon behind, he told them he wouldn't be going on a Ripper binge because Caroline would be calling to check in every hour. He trusted her. After she found out about Bonnie, she found him in the family mausoleum and while he wished he could remember Bonnie, part of Caroline wished she could trade places with him, so it wouldn't hurt so much without the memories. While she may not have had Bonnie anymore, and at the time she didn't even know where Tyler was, he told her she had him. She had been there for him the night before and even in his amnesiac state he could tell she'd been there for him in the past, so it was his turn to be there for her.
And this episode's cliffhanger was… Dr. Maxfield checked Jesse's blood work and could tell he had vampire blood in his system. He guessed it was because he had been injured to the point of needing to be healed and then had been compelled to forget. The vampire blood meant step 1 to creating a vampire was done. So all he had to do was step 2: inject him with something and just sit back and let him die.
