Fans of "The Vampire Diaries" are waiting to find out what will happen to Damon Salvatore when the series returns for season six in the fall, but Ian Somerhalder might have already revealed the fate of his character. On May 31, the actor shared a photo featuring a grave site with Damon on the headstone. He captioned the photo with "rest in peace Damon Salvatore." This sent his Twitter followers into a frenzy.
Fans of the actor and the series have been very vocal about the potential permanent death of the character on the series. Some fans have even threatened to stop watching the series if Damon does not return for season six of the CW drama. Julie Plec has teased that Damon and Bonnie will be seen again on the series, but she did not reveal how the characters would survive the end of the other side.
Stefan will be on some type of search when season six begins. His character crossed over to the other side in the episode before the season five finale, but he was able to cross back over before the finale ended. He was joined by Alaric, Enzo, and Tyler, but Damon was not able to make it through before the end. Alaric comforted Elena in the final moments of the episode before a blinding flash of light ended the action for the season. It signaled the end of the other side.
Ian Somerhalder has been keeping busy since the end of the season aired on CW. He just left Brazil, but he celebrated a milestone before he left the country. He revealed on his Twitter that he hit the five million follower mark on his account. He was grateful to his fans for the achievement.
It is not clear whether or not Damon will return for season six. The cast will return to film the new episode in July, and fans will need to keep an eye on Atlanta once production begins. Will Ian Somerhalder head to the set to join his "TVD" family to film season six? Julie Plec seems to think so, and she would know. However, Ian's post to his Instagram has fans wondering.
