Sometimes what makes "The Vampire Diaries" so great is not what happens, but the way in which it happens. Case in point Thursday night's episode -- if you haven't seen "The Dinner Party" yet, you may want to turn away now.
What happened here ultimately was something most of us saw coming -- the death of Elijah. We knew that he was likely going to go in order for Klaus to ultimately arrive, but so many of us assumed that it would be Damon who was largely the most responsible party (even if it wasn't him who stuck the knife in himsef). However, the real attacker here ultimately ended up being at first Alaric (who is finally getting some great material this season) followed by Elena.
Damon and Andie did create the whole situation by joining Elijah for a dinner party with Jenna and Alaric -- but really no one there could finish the job. Alaric did not realize he needed to leave the knife in for something to happen, and Elijah ended up walking away. It wasn't until Elena brilliantly tricked the Original into listening to her that things started to truly go south for him, and watching our heroine plunge the knife into his heart was more than a little joyful.
Ultimately the rest of the episode was not as eventful. Caroline and Tyler were nowhere in sight after what happened last week, and the mots notable thing for Bonnie is that Luka's father sapped her of her life force while she was with Jeremy. (Okay, that is a pretty big deal.) As for Stefan opening up about his past violence, it ultimately felt a little too tacked-on to be complete effective.
What did you think of this episode overall?

I liked it. There was suspense and intrigue. Plus the end with Katherine in the shower and Damon walking in? That was brilliant. I think Katherine is going to stir up some trouble, as always. I also think that Elena and Alaric need to tell Jenna the truth.
