It looks like Elena (Nina Dobrev) is in for some pain in the upcoming "Vampire Diaries" episode, 521, "Promised Land," for which the CW released promotional photos on Thursday, April 17.

In one of the last episodes of the season, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena escape from Markos' (Raffi Barsoumian) control only to find themselves stranded in a remote location. This gives them a chance to talk – as we saw at the end of "Resident Evil," they're pretty good at that now – and for Stefan to philosophical with Elena about her relationship with Damon (Ian Somerhalder).

Meanwhile, Liv (Penelope Mitchell) and Luke's (Chris Brochu) attempt to protect the doppelgangers goes badly, so they come up with a dangerous new strategy. It looks like the "Promised Land" photos in the slideshow offer a look at this "dangerous new strategy" – and Elena is right in the middle of it. It seems as though Liv may have done something to Elena, and whatever happens is going to lead to brother and sister facing off, with Elena on the ground in the middle. Will this at least work in the end? And where is Stefan during this? Could they have separated the doppelgangers for a reason to protect them since (at least) one attempt doesn't go as planned? Is he still in the truck?

Elsewhere, Damon recruits Matt (Zach Roerig) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) to help set a trap for Markos, but Markos has a devastating surprise of his own. Bonnie (Kat Graham) finally tells Caroline (Candice Accola) she's been keeping the truth about the Other Side from everyone, but while Bonnie looks for a way to stop Markos, Caroline sees an unthinkable act of violence by a Traveler.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 5 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on the CW. "Promised Land," written by Rebecca Sonnenshine and directed by Michael Allowitz, airs May 8. What do you think of these episode 21 photos?
