The Utica Public Library is excited to announce its Annual Summer Reading Program will kick-off on July 7!

The Summer Reading Program is an important, and fun, part of your child's summer activities! School may be on break, but your child's growth and development need not be. Take part in reading activities, craft programs, educational programs, and just-for-fun events all summer long at the Utica Public Library! (See below for a list of events and activities!)

Here's how the program works:

  • Sign up in the Children's Room beginning July 7. The Program runs July 7 - August 9 (though events take place all summer long!)
  • Record the books read during the Program in the Reading Log.
  • Stop in the Children's Room each week to get a sticker for your reading activities!
  • Turn in your Reading Log at the end of the Summer Reading Program.
  • If you've read at least 5 books (one each week!) during the Program you could win a great prize!
  • Receive Bonus Prize Drawing entries for attending Summer Reading Program events!

The Annual Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the M&T Bank / Partners Trust Bank Charitable Fund, a donor-advised fund o the The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Inc.

A reading program for ages 0-2.

Friday, July 11, 10:30am, All Ages
J-Star of the Emmy Award winning PBS show, The Zinghoppers, returns for a fun-filled science concert!

Tuesday, July 15, 10:30am, All Ages
Mad scientist Dave Moreland conducts hilarious experiments in this zany show!

Fizz, Boom, ROCK!
Friday, July 25, 10:30am, All Ages
The Sock Rockerz come all the way from Nashville for a silly, sparkly, rocking concert sure to get you on your feet!

Bullying Prevention Performances
These powerful and important performances are not to be missed.
Performer Tim Collins returns to the Utica Public Library with his educational, moving, and powerful one-man shows about bullying and bullying prevention for children, teens, adults, caregivers, educators and anyone concerned with the health, safety and well-being of our community's youth.

The Magic of Jim Perry
Monday, July 28, 6:00pm, All Ages
Jim Perry will amaze and astound with his magical illusion show!

Day of the Doctor
Tuesday, July 29, 1:30pm, Ages 5-18, Registration required.
Make Dr. Who crafts and answer Timelord trivia for prizes! Fish fingers and custard will be served. Also, a special appearance by the TARDIS! Get your picture taken in the Doctor's time and space travelling ship!

Puppet Show: Stop that Bullying Bull!
Saturday, August 2, 11:00am, All Ages
Local puppet troupe, The Guild of Thespian Puppets, presents a show about the importance of putting an end to bullying, while also entertaining with original, hand-made puppets!

Exploding Geoscience!
Wednesday, August 6, 2:00pm, All Ages
Learn about the extinction of the dinosaurs from palentologists Mike and Roberta Straka! See a 15-foot-long Mosasaur skeleton and a 65 million year-old meteorite!

Summer Reading Celebration Featuring THE MUSTARD BAND!
Wednesday, August 13, 1:00-3:00pm, All Ages
Utica's own The Mustard Band performs selections from Schoolhouse Rock! during the Library's annual Summer Reading Celebration with crafts, games, and refreshments!

Planetarium Adventures: Star Stories!
Tuesday, August 19, Ages 6 and up.
Three times to choose from (10:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm), Space is limited. Registration required.
Learn about the constellations in the night sky when the planetarium comes to the Library!

In addition to these and many other programs, the Library's successful gaming programs continue throughout the summer!

Tabletop Gaming
Wednesdays and Thursdays, 1:30pm (July-August, 3:00pm the rest of the year), Ages 11+.
Come and play a variety of board and card games!

Chess Club
Mondays, 3:00pm (Starting July 7), Ages 8+.
Come play and learn to play Chess.

Magic: the Gathering Tournaments -- FREE!
Saturdays, 12:30pm, Ages 11+.
You must have your own deck and know how to play.
June 14, August 16: COMMANDER
July 26: STANDARD
All tournaments are FREE. First prize is a one-of-a-kind custom playmat, plus other great prizes! To see each month's playmat, join the Upstate NY Magic: the Gathering Facebook group.
