The USA improved to 2-0 in the preliminary round with a marathon 3-2 shootout victory Saturday at the Bolshoy Ice Dome over the host Russia.
Warroad native T.J. Oshie scored on four of six shootout attempts to outlast Ilya Kovalchuk and Pavel Datsyuk in five sudden death attempts.
The game got to overtime and a shootout after Russia had a goal disallowed in the third period. After review, video showed that the net was off its mooring. A few seconds before the goal, US goaltender Jonathan Quick slid across the crease and moved the net. The whistle should have blown then.
The US tied the game at 1-1 and took a 2-1 lead with power play goals in the second and third period. Cam Fowler got the US on the board late in the second period by re-directing a pass from James van Riemsdyk into the net behind Sergei Bobrovsky.
Joe Pavelski gave the US a 2-1 lead midway through the third period by one-timing a pass from Patrick Kane into the open net behind Bobrovsky.
Pavel Datsyuk scored both Russian goals, including the tying goal on the power play about three and a half minutes after Pavelski gave the US the lead. His first goal got the scoring started midway through the second period on a breakaway.
The US now has a show down Sunday against Slovenia in what could determine the winner of Group A. Slovenia is 1-1 after falling to Russia and beating Slovakia.

Nino Niederreiter finished preliminary play without a point in three games, but has been an effective player for Switzerland. He finished with four shots on goal in 16 minutes and 29 seconds in Switzerland’s 1-0 win over the Czech Republic. Switzerland finished pool play with a 2-1 record and a plus-one goal differential.
