Uranus and Pluto are currently in a square and this configuration that will last until 2016. A square is a 90 degree angle that brings stressful and trying conditions. The square will take on the attributes of both the planet and the signs the planets are in. Uranus and Pluto came together in an exact square during June-July of 2012 at 8 degrees of Capricorn/Aries, August-September at 7 degrees, and September-October of 2012 at 6 degrees. In 2013 the square becomes exact May 16-June 2, at 11 degrees, and October 17-November 16 at 9 degrees. The square does not have to be exact for events to occur, but it is during this period the energy of the square reaches a peak, and events are more likely to occur representative of the aspect itself.
Pluto has been in the sign of Capricorn since 2008. Capricorn is the sign ruling big business, banking, and the power brokers in the world and Capricorn is connected to the Earth. It is the natural ruler of the tenth house of business and priorities. It is a Cardinal sign, meaning the energy moves quickly and is of importance in terms of events that occur when it is aspecting another planet. Capricorn is the natural ruler of the planet Saturn, often associated with contraction, restriction, delays and obstacles. Saturn is the planet that gives us our structure.
Pluto is the planet of death and regeneration or transformation and during its 16 year cycle through Capricorn it will take on attributes of the planet Saturn/Capricorn as it is in the sign that rules Saturn. Pluto is connected with oil, nuclear energy or weapons and it can represent the ‘bully or bullies in the world or our lives, or those we perceive as bullies.’ It is also associated with power, power struggles and extreme corruption. It brings intense and buried needs to the surface, even at the expense of the existing order.
Uranus is in Aries, the natural ruler of the first house of the self. While in this sign we as individuals and the collective will feel the need to exert ourselves, our opinions and ideas. This is the nature of the first house of the horoscope. Aries is ruled by Mars, often called the ‘God of War,’ and the energy to assert oneself becomes very strong in this sign.
The nature of Uranus is to bring change, often sudden and unexpected or disruptive. Uranus is about the new, the untried and it is about revolution. It rules explosions, electricity and aircraft as well as electronic equipment and even the internet.
While in Aries, Uranus will take on the nature of the Aries/Mars which is quick, aggressive or assertive that can be volatile.
So, when these two planets clash, they clash big, and the result is change and transformation in the world. The last time Pluto and Uranus were in a square was 1932-34 with 5 exacts hits. During this time we saw the Great Depression, political and social upheaval throughout the world and the rise of extremism. In January 1933 Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany which led to the taking away of civil liberties for many Germans and Jews. As he rose in power, the rest is history.
Pluto rules bullies and those whose drive for power is extreme. It represents plutocrats, dictators, and those whose power over others can be absolute. During the last square in the 30’s this became evident in Europe and led to political, geographic and economic changes. We should consider the many lessons of the past as we face the future. Hitler rose to power in Germany as a result of the extreme financial deprivations suffered after WW1. He had an extreme drive for power, which led to his actions and for a period of time he terrorized the world.
During the Uranus-Pluto square of the 1930’s Uranus was in Aries and Pluto was in Cancer. Cancer is the natural ruler of the fourth house of the home and the homeland, and is the most emotional of signs ruled by the moon. Today, Pluto is in Capricorn, the opposite of Cancer, the natural ruler of the tenth house of business and priorities.
During 2012 we saw events relating to the Uranus-Pluto square that concern money, shortages, slow or non-existent economic growth, power plays and power struggles around the world, in Greece and Europe, the Middle East and the United States. Rogue governments continued to push the issue of acquiring nuclear weapons such as Iran and North Korea. Pluto rules nuclear weapons and materials and while it may not be a popular theme to talk about a nuclear arms race, the fact is this situation is upon us as a collective. It is not a question of if rogue states acquire nuclear materials but rather when. It was a hotly contested Presidential race and the Republican Party continues to be divided with Tea Party republicans opposing the efforts of their counterparts in Congress and pushing ideology to what is generally considered extreme limits. Jupiter rules the Republican Party (and governments) and the Uranus-Pluto square fell on Jupiter in 2012 in the US natal chart and continues to do so during the first quarter of 2013. Thus, the divide among parties will continue.
2012 was a year of violence in the US as lone shooters killed others in public places at least 37 times killing or injuring multiple people each time. (http://www.bradycampaign.org/xshare/pdf/major-shootings.pdf) 2012 ended with gun laws in the US being debated on the heels of the Sandy Hook shooting, where 20 children and their teachers were murdered.
The square brings negative, angry energy and the world will continue to be an angry place as long as it continues. We can expect to see issues that are similar in nature to those of 2012, but as issues are revealed we can also expect to see change occur along the way. The Sandy Hook shooting is one such example: gun laws are now being examined by Congress.
Mutual reception between Pluto and Saturn
While Uranus and Pluto continue to be at odds with each other throughout 2013, there is the mutual reception between Pluto and Saturn since Saturn moved into Scorpio October of 2012.
Pluto is in Capricorn, Saturn’s ruler and Saturn is in Scorpio, considered the ruler of Pluto, giving the two planets a stronger working relationship. This is a transit of the phoenix rising from the ashes, which is how Pluto transits are often described. With Pluto transits there is generally a period of breakdown followed by a period of rebuilding. This transit helped the US Congress reach agreement to avoid the ‘fiscal cliff,’ and will continue to do so in the future out of necessity if not good will. Saturn in Scorpio will trine America’s Sun at 13 degrees of Cancer first quarter of 2013 helping to create more stable conditions in the US Natal chart.
The times Saturn and Pluto are in mutual reception will be the periods that positive shifts in the world can occur. The first such shift occurs December 15, 2012-January 7, 2013, as the planets become exact. The planets do not have to be exact to exert this influence, but this represents the peak period of energy. After January, the next transit occurs February 24-March 15. Saturn and Pluto will be in an exact sextile at 8 degrees again in September.
The last time this mutual reception occurred between Saturn and Pluto was December 1776-January 1778. During this time the American Civil War raged on, and the Articles of Confirmation and Perpetual Union were formed as an agreement between the 13 founding states that established the USA as a confederation of foreign states and served as its first constitution. The article’s drafting by the Constitutional Congress began in mid 1776 and was sent to the states for ratification late 1777.
While the energy of mutual reception is generally considered positive, it is intense, harsh energy that can result in either the best, or the worst of situations. It represents the necessity of people working together as opposed to an actual desire to do so. Pluto-Saturn represents a very heavy, intense energy that is prone to secretive actions and big wins or big losses.
The Pluto-Uranus square and the US Chart
While mutual reception exists between Saturn and Pluto the energy will continue to create disruptive circumstances in the US and abroad. Pluto and Uranus will square and oppose the US Sun at 13 degrees of Cancer throughout 2013 and 2014. The Sun in a chart represents the vital core, or in other words, the collective of the US-you and I, the people. It represents both the leadership and basic life principal. The Sun, along with Venus and Jupiter lie in the US natal chart 7th house. The 7th house represents courts, marriage and partners and is considered the house of ‘open enemies,’ or in other words those who are known enemies and make their relationship known.
Pluto is the planet of ultimate transformation and many changes will occur in the leadership of the nation as well as the people. As the Sun lies in the house of open enemies it is likely incidents and conflicts will occur between the US and those who are our known enemies. Pluto also rules nuclear materials and weapons and during this transit it is likely we will encounter the threat of nuclear situations. Pluto-Sun is a transformative process that is indicative of power struggles on many levels, both internally and with the leadership of the country as well as threats from abroad. At its most positive the energy can create great transformation and change if too much opposition and resistance is not aroused, which is exactly what the transit is inclined to do. The last time Pluto aspected the Sun of the US was 1976-78, and it was a square.
Uranus square the Sun of the US will bring sudden, unexpected and explosive incidents that are outside the norm. The nation will be in a state of turmoil and change during this period. Uranus in Aries relates to those who are tired of the status quo or who feel oppressed by the powers that be. There will be many challenges to the nation and to the leadership of the nation by those who feel oppressed, or whose interests are not being served. The Uranus-Pluto square is exact at 11 degrees May 16-June 2, 2013. This falls within 2 degrees of America’s Sun, and will be the first hit of this transformative aspect. May 12-August 23 Uranus moves to 12 degrees, nearly conjunct the US Sun. October 17-November 16, Uranus and Pluto are in an exact square again at 9 degrees of Aries-Capricorn.
In March- April of 2014 there will be a grand cross involving Pluto’s opposition to Jupiter in Cancer, square Uranus and opposite Mars. This will be a watershed moment in American history that will represent a financial crisis, money and our political system, as Mars will conjunct America’s Saturn, square the Sun and Pluto in America’s chart. I will write more on this challenging configuration in the future.
