The Upper Paw focuses on providing old-school retail charm

The Upper Paw is a new retail establishment located in the heart of Deep Ellum to cater to the needs of the Downtown area pet owners -- who the shopkeepers refer to as "pet parents". It was founded by Kathleen and Brian Evett who invested more than two years to find the perfect area and location where they felt they could make the most difference.

"If a customer is running late getting to the store, we'll wait for you," said Kathleen Evett. "If we don't have what you want, we will do our best to try to get it for you. We want to be your one stop for everything you need for your pet."

This is the type of old-school retail charm that has been lost in the age of the big box stores and this is the Evett's first foray into small business ownership. They haven't quit their day jobs just yet and have recruited Brian's brother James Jordan in to help with the day-to-day operations of the store.

They decided to open the store based upon the love they have for their "two kids": Abbi Gail (Red-Heeled/Jack Russel mix) and Kasey Michelle (Rat Terrier). Due to their many visits to big box stores, they realized that most of them carried the exact same merchandise and those items were not always what was best for the four-legged family members.

The Upper Paw wants to be a haven for local residents so that they enjoy visiting with their pets and offering both every day good as well as specialty items for those "good boy/girl" days.
