On September 4, 2013 the University of California, Irvine opened registration for a free online survival course that is being called the “Dead Course.” AMC has teamed up with the University of California to bring this special online class that is free and is currently open to the public world wide. This “Walking Dead” inspired course is a survival class, after all, the CDC’s Dr. Ali Khan has said "If you are generally well equipped to deal with a zombie apocalypse you will be prepared for a hurricane, pandemic, earthquake, or terrorist attack."
The “Dead Course” will be an eight-week free online class that will start on October 14, 2013, which is the day after the new season of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” begins. This course will be taught by University of California professors who will be giving lessons on society, science and survival. These professors are from the public health, social sciences, physics and math departments of the University of California where the are calling the online class "Society, Science, Survival: Lessons from AMC's 'The Walking Dead.’”
There have been other similar courses to the “Dead Course” but none have been like this. This is the first time that AMC has partnered with a college to offer a zombie survival course and none of the previous courses have been free and open to students around the world. Although it is possible that they may need to limit the registration, currently the online class is open to everyone world wide. The “Dead Course” has been advertised on “The Walking Dead” Facebook page as well as through the University of California. It is expected that this course will be highly popular.
