USA TODAY, Feb. 5, 2013 reported on a recent study performed by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons that stated that the United States remains the capital of plastic surgery worldwide. Brazil comes in second. The number of surgeries performed in the United Statestotaled 3.1 million. This number included surgical procedures such as breast augmentation, tummy tucks, nose jobs, and facelifts as well as non-surgical procedures such as Botox injections, chemical peels and laser hair removal.
The total number of surgeries reported by 996 plastic surgeons covers 6.3 million surgeries and 8.3 million non-surgical procedures.The findings were based on surveys sent to the 996 plstic surgeons around the world and "they assume that fellow surgeons in each country have similar procedure rates."
Breast augmentation is the number one surgical procedure in the United States and worldwide the most popular surgery is liposuction. Rhinoplasty (nose jobs) is more popular in China, Japan and Brazil with the United States coming in fourth.
According to the society, the United States has the most plastic surgeons with 5950. Brazil has 5024, and China has 2000. The United Kingdom has only 450 and Canada has 425. These numbers are probably not including all plastic surgeons, cosmetic surgeons or facial plastic surgeons worldwide.
