The Unicorn Theatre announces the 2013-2014 season

The Unicorn Theatre located at 3828 Main in Kansas City announced the seven shows that will make up their 40th season. The plays will include two Tony nominees, two Pulitzer Prizes, a Tony Award winner and a world premiere. According to information released by Marketing Director Chris Hernandez the audience can experience dramatic highs, shocking revelations and plenty of laughs during the seven evening of life theatre.

“Venus in Fur” by David Ives kicks off the season on Sept. 4, 2013. This 2012 Tony-nominated play is based on the classic erotic novel. The play is a game of cat and mouse that distorts fantasy and reality, seduction and power, love and sex. The play runs from Sept. 4 through Sept. 29 on the Jerome Stage.

The second show is “Seminar” which will be co-produced with the UMKC Theatre. The play by Theresa Rebeck is a comedy about four students taking private lessons from an unorthodox international literary figure. The play runs from Oct. 16 through Nov. 10 on the Mainstage.

“Clybourne Park” by Bruce Norris is inspired by the Lorraine Hansberry classic A Raisin in the Sun. The winner of the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize the play is about race, real estate and the volatile values of each. This play is also co-produced by the UMKC Theatre. The play runs from Dec. 4 through Dec. 29 on the Mainstage.

The one-woman play, “Grounded” by George Brant is a World Premiere and part of the NNPN Rolling World Premiere. The play centers on a female fighter pilot who due to a pregnancy ends up flying drones in Afghanistan from a stateside location. The play runs from Jan. 22 through Feb. 9, 2014 on the Jerome Stage.

The Tony Award nominee, “Other Desert Cities” by Jon Robin Baitz is the fifth show of the 2013-2014 season. Secrets abound at a family reunion in Palm Springs. The play runs from Mar. 5 through Mar. 30 on the Mainstage.

An Iraqi war veteran returns to Philadelphia, to find his Puerto Rican family in crisis in, “Water By The Spoonful” by Quiara Alegria Hudes. The play won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play runs from Apr. 23 to May 18 on the Jerome Stage.

Closing out the season is the light-hearted, “By The Way, Meet Vera Stark” by Lynn Nottage. The play is a look at Hollywood racial stereotypes. The play runs from June 4 through June 29 on the Mainstage.
