On March 13, 1999 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, one of the worst decisions in recent boxing history was scored in the first fight between Evander Holyfield of Atlanta, GA and Lennox Lewis of Great Britain.
In a fight where Lewis clearly outlanded Holyfield by 23 percentage points, landing the cleaner and harder punches, while also using his jab very effectively, judges Eugenia Williams and Larry O'Connell failed to acknowledge those facts.
Instead, Williams scored the bout 115-113 for Holyfield, and O'Connell, Lewis' countryman, scored the bout 115-115, leaving the official outcome of the bout a draw. Stanley Christodoulou, the only judge to score the bout in favor of Lewis, handed in an official scorecard of 116-113.
Harold Lederman, HBO's unofficial ringside judge, who is well respected in the boxing community, scored the bout 117-111 for Lewis. One of the only rounds Holyfield clearly won was round three, the prophecy round. Prior to the fight, Holyfield said God told him that he would knock Lewis out in the third round.
