Times are tough, even for Teddy Bears. Recently, Whitney area residents reported seeing the tragic aftermath of one such Teddy Bear, whose remains were found lying in the Pittman Wash. The carcass was in such a state as to make further identification impossible. The bear is believed to have leapt to his death from a nearby wash overpass bridge.
Unfortunately, local authorities chose to ignore the calls from residents and have, as of the time of writing, refused to investigate the unwholesome demise of this nameless, faceless Teddy Bear. The sheriff’s department did state that this is believed to be a suicide and no foul play is suspected.
The question remains as to what drove this bear to take his own life. Perhaps he was another victim of the economy, or maybe he was just a victim of the changing times. A situation we’ve all seen play out time and again; a child prefers the enticement offered by their iPad and, now unwanted and forgotten, the Teddy Bear found himself tossed out to fend for himself on the mean streets of Vegas. Perhaps this bear lived for a time in the storm drains alongside other of our city’s indigents.
We may never know. However, we can all agree that this is a tragic sight. When will something be done to help find a new place in society for these apparently outdated Teddies? Most of us should be able recall a time when a Teddy Bear just like this one provided us with friendship and all the safety in the world. Is a Smart Phone or other such fancy electronic device really capable of filling that role for our own children?
A few days after the attached photos were taken the corpse of the Teddy Bear remained in the wash to further decompose. Finally, after the heavy rains earlier this week, whatever was left of him was gone—washed away like any other piece of trash that finds its way into the gutter. Truly a modern tragedy.
