The unethical karaoke host controversy

In a world nearly consumed by greed it’s refreshing to see that ethical professional courtesy still exists in the world of karaoke. However, not every karaoke host follows the unwritten code of honor shared by the majority of KJs.

Most average Americans are aware of the poor economy and how it affects their budget. They see small businesses closing down and prices going up. What they don’t see is how the closing of one business hurts the many people who relied on this company for income. Venders, suppliers, contractors, employees, entertainment services, and neighboring businesses are all negatively affected.

Karaoke hosts lose shows because the poor economy has prevented consumers from going out to shows as frequently, and has caused singers to spend less money when they attend shows. Some shows simply are lost because the host venue closes down. In an attempt to fill the void created by a lost show, karaoke hosts will try to find another venue, and this is where a controversy may arise.

With virtually thousands of possible venues in South Florida where a good karaoke show could help increase business, it would seem unnecessary for a KJ to attempt to steal a show from another host. Yet some KJs without honor or ethics have walked into karaoke venues and tried to steal that show from the current host. Some will try to undersell the current KJ by doing shows for less money. It’s not the poor economy causing the KJ to behave this way; it is a lack of honor and respect for others that allows him to feel it is okay to steal business from another host.

Sometimes it is an owner, manager or employee that creates a controversy by attempting to hire a new karaoke host at their venue prior to terminating their current host. This has occurred at two locations in Palm Beach County in recent months and has caused heated discussions, harmed the relationships between several KJs and infuriated fans of the hosts.

At one location in Delray Beach, a KJ walked into a restaurant and tried to steal a karaoke show from the host who was setting up his equipment for the show that night. The unethical KJ spoke with the manager, examined the equipment and even engaged in a conversation with the current KJ who was offering his assistance to sign this person up to sing.

This is probably one of the worst examples of a KJ without conscience but it doesn’t reflect on the majority of honorable hosts who refuse to accept shows that are being offered where another host is currently performing.

Business owners who believe that money is more important than honor often find it difficult if not impossible to bring a talented KJ to their venue. It is much easier to find an unethical, unprofessional karaoke host to perform shows for less money, however 9 out of 10 will fail because the bottom line is that you get what you pay for.

A good karaoke host has loyal fans that follow him or her from venue to venue while a bad karaoke host brings nothing but controversy.
