The offshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico belong to the soverin nation of the United States of America. This government protects this property for the citizens of the United States. Here along the gulf coast we depend highly upon the gulf environment to provide millions of people with jobs surrounding the seafood and recreational fishing industry as well as the travel and vacation industries.
Pollution of the waters of the Gulf of Mexico destroys these industries as well as having national consequences with seafood distributed through out the nation. Pollution coming from oil and gas facilities located through out the region.
Most of us do not know the unseen dangers associated with offshore oil and gas pollution. All of us are familuar with the ugliness of oil spills spread across oceans and beaches, which destroys businesses along the gulf coast. Yet few of us know the death that lays beneath the oily slick which we can see.
Crude oil produced from offshore oil & gas facilities contain a huge amount of harmful and toxic chemicals which can destroy ocean food chains as well as human life. Crude oil contains such harmful and deadly toxins such as N.O.R.M = naturally occuring radioactive = gama radiation material , Benzyne , Tolulene both of which are cancer causing agents as well as a vast number of other harmful and toxic chemicals, that are absorbed by the sea life and inturn consumed by us .
Congress has passed laws such as the Clean Water Act and the Offshore Oil Pollution act to prevent illegal discharges of environmental pollutants which will get into the ocean food chain as well as on our beaches and eventually end up being absorbed by each of us and affecting our health as well as our lives , our children's lives and our grand childrens lives
Laws are not meant to make our lives hard or difficult , rather they are made to protect our lives , our health , the health of our children and our grand children.
And yet on a daily basis these laws which protect each of us are broken by employees of oil and gas companies operating in the Gulf of Mexico who are covering up illegal discharges of oil and other chemical pollulants which destroy our oceans with impunity .
There are approximately 3,500 oil & gas producing facilities and approximately 350 drilling rigs , who are todayat this very moment discharging overboard water , oil and chemicals which are polluting our offshore waters and affecting the sea life which we consume and are having harmful effects on our health and lives.
Tomorrow we will discuss how these facilities operating offshore discharge these harmful chemicals and toxins into our environment.
