Safety remains to be the main concern for the Nevada State Boxing Commission when professional mixed martial artists get in and out of the cage. In that spirit The Ultimate Fighter Finale 11 at the Pearl inside the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nev. on June 19 resulted in 13 medical suspensions for winners as well as losers to ensure that all injuries receive the proper medical care and time to heal.
"Many kind of injuries result in a medical suspension after an MMA fight in the state of Nevada," said Keith Kizer, Nevada State Boxing Commission.
As a general rule all lacerations, knockouts, TKO's, submissions, and broken bones result in medical suspensions of 30-60 days respectively by all sanctioning bodies. Fighters on medical suspensions are not allowed to fight in any state that regulates MMA for their own protection. In some instances training is prohibited as well.
"Any TKO will result in a 30-day suspension (no sparring or fighting), and a KO will result in a 60-day suspension in the state of Florida," said James Chittenden, Florida State Boxing Commission.
In spite of the frequency of injuries during professional MMA fights the physical damage is usually less severe than in most other full-contact sports, according to several medical studies.
In addition to the medical suspension records fighters also have to pass a physical exam by a licensed ring side physician prior to the official weigh in to rule out any pre-existing injuries or medical conditions.
