The Ugly Truth

Abby (Katherine Heigl) is successful in her work as a television producer, but unsuccessful in her love life. Enter Mike (Gerard Butler); a loud, controversial, uncouth, chauvinistic fellow who hosts a news segment called “The Ugly Truth.” In this show, he blasts apart what women think men want and is just basically brutally honest. In a desperate dash for ratings, the station where Abby works picks him up. She immediately hates him. Or does she?

Robert Luketic directs a film, that, without a doubt, fills in all the requirements for a Romantic Comedy. Girl hates boy, boy hates girl, girl needs boy's help, boy begins to like girl, girl begins to like boy, blah blah blah. Classic. But sadly, classically predictable.

Nicole Eastman and Karen McCullah Lutz wrote, yes, a completely trite script with just a few unexpected moments thrown in, but this movie is actually not terrible. If you are looking for an honest to goodness romantic comedy, then it’s an okay choice.

If, however, you are looking for a film that does not place the female sex back in the dark ages, maybe go for something else.

Heigl and Butler are good and have great chemistry, that any audience can see. But even their chemistry can not help the script grab ahold of some mystery. From the second the two are on screen together, we know the rest of the film. Predictable. The writers threw in some crass moments that are based around a man telling the ugly truth to a woman who is hoping for romance, but those don’t really shock...they merely highlight a regular plot wildly in search of something that makes it different.

The film definitely has some fun moments, but if it were an actual news segment, it would be more of a weather report than a current affair.
