There are only a few pop stars that can get thousands of fans out of
the house on a work and school night, midweek. The Grammy winning and
platinum selling artist Pink did just that. Columbus is one of many
stops on the artist's "Truth About Love Tour". If you were any where
near the Schottenstein Center in Columbus wednesday night, you would
have been amidst the the chaos as fans clamored to get to their seats
to get a glimpse of the icon known as Pink. There were many who have
been waiting years to see the pop princess in action.
As fans waited for Pink to take the stage, they were treated to a
performance by The Hives, a band from Sweden. They put on quite an
exhilarating and hypnotizing set. Many in the crowd were up and
dancing with their uptempo songs, even though many had never heard of
them. The Hives would prove to be a great choice for the opener, with
high energy that really got the crowd pumped for Pink.
Just as the last few fans trickled into the Schottenstein Center, they
were greeted by a rather strange little gentleman. He randomly
wandered around the audience, licked the balled heads of concert
goers, and danced with women who had obviously already had got the
party started. He would later be revealed as the MC for the evening,
and would introduce Pink as a contestant on the game show The Truth
About Love.
The stage was set. All that was needed was Pink herself. On cue the
music started, and the artist emerged. She was dangling high above,
with the help of three muscle men supporting her, as she sang "Raise
Your Glass". The crowd roared at just the site of Pink, but those
roars would only get louder as Pink launched into a flurry of
acrobatic moves (something she's been doing since she debuted the
performance at the 2010 Grammy's). The first few songs of the night
were a pure high energy that had the crowd up and dancing in the
aisles. She danced around the stage singing her many hits like "Just
Like A Pill", " Blow Me (One Last Kiss)". Later she would slow it down a little giving herself and
fans a moment to catch their breath, singing a cover to Chris Issaks
"Wicked Game" and again later when she sang "Just Give Me A Reason",
her duet with Nate Ruess (from F.U.N.) via prerecorded video. Pink
takes fans on a journey. She doesn't just sing songs from her
current and past albums, she highlights them with sensual
choreographed dance, acrobatics, and at times adds some realistic
theatrics. For example, when she performed "Try" (The Truth About Love
2012). She also threw in a few hip hop moves when she goes back in
time to her early 2000's top hits like: "There You Go" (Can't Take Me
Home album 2000), "Most Girls" and "You Make Me Sick", only to bring
it back full circle with more current hits off of her "Truth About
Love” album she released in 2012.
Pink is known for her pop attributes to music, although she has an r &
b background. First discovered by L.A. Reid when he heard a demo by
her then girl group Choice. The group would audition and be signed to
his record label Laface, but later L.A. would give Pink an ultimatum
to "go solo or go home". Her decision to go solo put her on the fast
track to selling millions of records and singles world wide. She has
won numerous awards and is one of the top selling artist of all time.
Pink is also a performer that gives back; she is currently involved in
many charities.
Pink is definitely an artist who wants to give fans their moneys worth
in entertainment. The Truth About Love tour has so many layers to it
that if you blink you’re sure to miss something besides the singing
and dancing. There are numerous outfit changes, high flying
acrobatic moves that leave concert goers holding their breath as Pink
dangles high above them, and a stunning light and stage set up that
rivals many of today's pop artists. She gives fans a glimpse into
her personal life without being too revealing. During her performance
of "Family Portrait", she showed pictures of her and her family.
Another time she shows pictures of her husband Carey Heart and young
daughter Willow. Just when you think the 2 hour set is coming to a
close, she gives fans more acrobats, more singing, and more dancing.
I think Pink is the only artist I know that gives a finale within a
finale. If Pink ever announces a tour in your city, do not hesitate
to go; it will be a show you will not want to miss.
