Installing hand sanitizers, providing immunizations, over the counter medications and similar measures might be of some limited value in contending with the current nationwide influenza outbreak, but the real solution probably lies elsewhere.
A more basic, objective, and scientific approach might be to attack the problem from an immune system deficiency standpoint, and this would ensue taking a careful look at the nutritional element in creating a strong and balanced personal immune defense.
It has been documented time and time again, that the prevalence of disease in America, specifically deficiency diseases which cover and include a wide range of ailments from arthritis, cancer, diabetes, and a host of bacterial and viral infections including the various strains of influenza to the common cold are likely the result of poor immune response.
The strength and health of the body's ability to resist and fight off these ailments is directly proportional to the quality of nutritional support its defenses are supplied with. Studies have continually confirmed and supported this, and perhaps the most damaging aspect of the overall picture is that governmental agencies that should be monitoring the quality and safety of America's food supply do not address the prevalence and existence of the detrimental effects of anti-nutritive elements such as refined sugars and carbohydrates, bleached flours, and the continued widespread availability and use of processed foods which rob the body's stored content of essential vitamins and minerals.
What most of us tend to forget and overlook is that the human body is a fragile, delicate, and sensitively balanced entity. Again, it has been scientifically proven and documented that even a slight missing dietary link can severely compromise a sensitively balanced immune system. We tend to take our bodies for granted, and mistakenly assume that the term “enriched” on so many food labels ensures that we are being protected by the U.S. food industry. The prevalence of hidden refined sugars in so many products along with the consumption of white (bleached, hence sterilized) flour products such as bread and rice can spell disaster; factor in the consumption of animal products which further contributes to a lessening intake of essential antioxidants and protective micro nutrients and it becomes painfully clear as to why we suffer from repeated, if not annual outbreaks of devastating viral and bacterial infections.
No matter what we are told or made to believe, it should always be remembered that nature is the healer and protector, our bodies were never designed for the kind of nutritional abuse we subject ourselves to. Time and time again, we hear of other societies and cultures, less technologically advanced than ours, but free or nearly free from the devastating illnesses plaguing our society. Complex carbohydrates, whole grains, berries, fruits and vegetables in their natural state were designed to protect us. To assume that we can manipulate or somehow improve upon something that is already balanced, perfect, and complete, is to demonstrate the arrogance and ignorance that has cost us so dearly, and will continue to unless we come to terms with and recognize this flawed element in modern civilized western thinking.
