Earlier this week The Wall Street Journal broke a widely covered report that Blizzard's StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty development costs exceeded $100 million, a number more on par with a Michael Bay film than an RTS, even one with such ridiculously high production values as StarCraft II. Still, it's a fact that has sense been rendered false by the Blizzard PR team in a mass email to press outlets this afternoon.
"Blizzard Entertainment has never disclosed the development cost of StarCraft II, and for competitive reasons, we will not do so," reads the email.
So where did the WSJ pull that number from? It turns out that $100 million was the development cost of World Of Warcraft.
Here's something to ponder: It may not have cost $100 million to produce, but could StarCraft II actually sell 100 million copies? Pre-Order sales have already eclipsed 700,000. One thing is certain: It will set sales records before it even hits retail shelves next week.
