The truth about Marissa Mayer's decision to leave Google

As an online marketer I’m constantly watching the news surrounding the top search engines. So, I notice things like Google updates and Bing starting their smear campaign against Google. Whether you’re an online marketer or just an everyday web surfer it would've been difficult to miss the news involving Yahoo and Google’s latest power shift. Marissa Mayer formerly of Google left the king of Search engines and went to Yahoo.

This is not news because she actually left Google in July of 2012 but her decision and it’s affects continue to make headlines. She has been repeatedly slammed in forums and various articles across the web. When news first hit about the former VP leaving Google it was all we in the SEO world could talk about.

We where sure there was going to be an immediate issue that was directly related to how search was done. It seemed “The big G” had lost one of its star players. Bu nothing could be further from the truth.

I’m sure that there were some underlying issues for her at Google. After all, she began her career with the company when she was only 24 years of age. Not to mention the fact that she dated Larry page for an undisclosed time. These things may have each played a small role in her decision but ultimately it was just simple math.

You can believe that she was very well compensated for leaving the best company on the planet. It’s said she earns an annual salary of $1 million plus what she would have earned at Google. On top of that, The Huffington Post stated she had earned 1.1 million in her first five months.

In reality this money and stock options had nothing to do with her decision to leave. As a VP of search products for Google she had made enough money to stop working many years ago. What she wanted is to be somewhere she could make a difference. Google has already climbed to the heights of just about everything. The decision was made out of a very human trait and we all have it.

She went to Yahoo to become CEO and be somewhere she was needed. She can turn Yahoo around and everyone will know it was Marissa’s leadership that made it happen. When you have the ability to do something like that, money is never really a factor.

Greatness is instilled in all of us and it’s not coaxed out with cash. Although it does help when you don’t clear millions each year it’s still not the only factor.
