Traveling to Egypt and Back Home Again, Matthew 2
After that, the Angel spoke to Joseph in a dream to get up and get himself and his family out of Israel and down into Egypt because Herod would try to kill the little boy. “And don’t come back until I tell you to.”
So, Joseph hurried and took off with Mary and little Jesus out of Israel. One wonderful part was that, because of the gifts of the Wise Men, the family would have enough money to live on in the strange country until they could go back home.
After living down there in Egypt for awhile Joseph was told by an Angel that the old King Herod was dead and it was safe to take little Jesus back to Israel. So Joseph packed up Mary and her little boy and headed home. They went back up to the little town of Nazareth where they first came from and Joseph set up his carpentry business there. Mary and Joseph had several more children; James, Joses, Simon, Judas, and some sisters. (Matthew 13)
Jesus grew up to be extra bright and healthy. Once, when Mary and Joseph took their family down to Jerusalem for a religious celebration, they lost their twelve-year-old Jesus. They hunted all over the great big city for him. He could have been kidnapped and sold for a slave or murdered just for the clothes he wore! They were worried sick!
They found him. In the church!
The teachers and preachers were sitting around amazed by Him, he was so smart and knew so much about the Ancient Bible and Jewish history and the meaning of the Psalms and things, much more than they did!
Mary scolded him for scaring them like that, but he said, “Don’t you know that I must get busy doing my Father’s business?”
He meant God’s business!
He went back home and obeyed them and continued to grow up tall and very intelligent and people liked him. God liked Him.
