The Annunciation, Luke 2
About two thousand years ago there was a little town in Israel near the Sea of Galilee on the north end of the River Jordan called Nazareth. A young girl there named Mary was promised by her parents to marry a fellow named Joseph. In those days a girl was promised while she was still a child so that she was sure to have someone to look after her. There was no other way for a woman to make a living.
Mary was a really sweet young lady and she loved the Lord. One day a miraculous thing happened. A glorious Angel appeared before her.
“Mary, you are very special to God,” the angel said.
Mary was stunned! She couldn’t figure out what was happening, but the Angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Mary. God has chosen you to have a baby and call him Jesus! He will be the Son of God.”
“How is that possible?," Mary said. "I’ve never slept with any man!”
“The Holy Spirit will come over you and you will have a Holy Baby. With God, nothing is impossible!”
“Okay, I am a servant of the Lord. Whatever you say let it be.”
Sure enough, before long Mary found herself pregnant. It was all amazing to her, but when Joseph found out he was sick about it. He thought sure that Mary had done something wrong. However, he was good hearted and thought he would send her out of town so nobody would find out.
In a dream, the Angel came to him and said, “Joseph, don’t be afraid to go ahead and marry Mary because the baby she is carrying was given Life by God’s Holy Spirit. She will have a baby boy and you will name him Jesus because he will save his people from the consequences of their sins.”
So, they got married and Joseph never touched her while she was pregnant.
