The activist Che Guevara once said, "...at the risk of sounding ridiculous, the true revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love." While not all of us wish to become revolutionaries, we can't create anything without the heart and its passion. We have to care about something to create art... or anything else of real value.
Unfortunately, we live in a world where rational intelligence and goal-directed actions are much more likely to dominate over the murky, messy, fuzzy wisdom of the heart. The heart doesn't operate in the realm of slick words and explanations, it doesn't have words ready and available to win or dominate arguments. The heart's domain is metaphoric images. We may get a feeling sense of "being in hot water" or "flowing down a river" or "lighting up" or "being on fire." When we get those images and sensory impressions, this is the heart speaking. Listening and responding to those images often brings a much deeper level of clarity and strength.
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin wrote, "Some day, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides, and gravity, we will harness for God the energies of love. And then, for the second time in the history of the world, humankind will have discovered fire."
May you discover your fire today.
