Autumn in Northern Michigan is a wonderful time to explore the great outdoors with your child. It is also the time of harvesting many fruits and vegetables. What a great time to talk to children about healthy foods and try some new recipes. This is prime time for local Farmer’s Markets, too.
Enjoy a visit to a local farmer’s pumpkin patch and pick out a pumpkin for Halloween. Try roasting pumpkin seeds and other delicious pumpkin recipes like pumpkin bread or pumpkin pie!
What a great time to check out an apple orchard and pick a few of the delicious orbs to eat fresh. Some orchards also have cider making facilities and offer fresh samples!
Take time to walk in the woods and admire the splendid colors of the leaves. Maybe even collect a few leaves to take home and use in a collage. Check out a tree identification book from the library and learn the names of the most common trees in the forest that is close to you.
Make time to admire Lake Michigan (or any Great Lake close to you) or a local lake nearby. The color of the water reflected from the sky makes for ever-changing shades of blue. And it is still a fun time to play on the beach and make autumn sand castles.
Don’t forget to check the autumn sky for migrating birds. It is a lot of fun to watch the geese practicing their “V” formations before they fly to a warmer climate.
Enjoy autumn with your child. The sights, the smells, the comfortable coolness make it a wonderful time of year. It is a season to treasure.
