Shawn Corrow,

After winning the unofficial Vermont state title in its first state tournament, the BFA-St. Albans girls hockey team made it nine state titles in 11 years on Monday night when it blanked top-seeded and snakebit Spaulding 2-0 at UVM's Gutterson Fieldhouse.

The Comets, seeded second with a 15-6-1 record including a pair of one-goal losses to the Crimson Tide (17-2-4) took control with a pair of goals early in the second period.

First, Taylor Girard scored, assisted by Desiree Hurlbut with 4:52 gone and then Tory Hubbard tallied 90 second later on an assist from Abbi Boomhoover and Rachel Hubbard.

After that, it was left to the stellar BFA defense and sophomore goalie Shanley Howrigan, who has now recorded shutouts in her last four playoff games dating back to a 1-0 win over the Tide in last year's state title game.

Howrigan stopped 21 shots, giving her 44 in two years in the championship game against the Crimson Tide, who lost in the title game for the third straight season.
