'FlashForward' tops this list (tvbythenumbers)
It's September, and that means two things--football has returned to the gridiron and new Fall shows have arrived on TV.
There are tons of new television shows hitting the small screen this month--but not every show appears to be a gem.
To help you better prep your DVR, here are five shows to keep an eye on.
5) "The Good Wife": After seeing many male politicians apologize publicly for their sexual trangressions--with their spouses strongly by their side--have you ever wondered what is going on in the mind of the wife? The Good Wife attempts to answer that question, as Julianna Margulies plays the title character, a woman who heads back to work as a trial lawyer after her husband (Chris Noth) gets busted in a major scandal. Sure, it's still a legal drama, but it's timely, fresh, and well cast.
Premieres September 22nd on CBS.
4) "Bored to Death": This HBO show stars Jason Schwartzman as a struggling Brooklyn novelist named Jonathan Ames, who, after grappling with writers block, places an successful ad for himself on Craigslist as an unlicensed private detective. Dependent on his knowledge of crime novels, Ames gets hired by a wide list of clients. The show embraces the film noir genre, and has a top rate cast which includes Ted Danson (Damages), Parker Posey, Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live), Zach Galifianakis (the "fat Jesus" from The Hangover). If the cast can create as much chemistry on-screen as we think they can, this could become a sleeper hit.
Premieres September 20th on HBO.
3) "Glee": This spirited show made its television debut in May, when FOX decided to air the pilot in anticipation of the actual Fall premiere. Debuting after the American Idol season finale, this show gained a loyal audience almost immediately. On September 9th, Glee returns to television. The show, about a bunch of lovable losers who join their high school glee club in hopes of reaching both their dreams and star potential, already has had featured songs debut in the top 5 on iTunes. The cast even went on a two-week long nationwide tour in August. While this glee club contains a group of underdogs, this show looks like a winner.
Premieres September 9th on FOX.
2) "FlashForward": This drama looks to draw in the Lost audience. And with the island-based drama comes to an end in 2010, ABC hopes they have another mysterious hit on their hands. In FlashForward, the world population blacks out simultaneously and sees 2 minutes and 17 seconds of a date six months into the future--April 29, 2010. Some see visions which allude to infidelity, rape, and even death. Nothing is genuinely revealed to the audience, and like Lost, you have to pay attention to small clues over a large period of time. It requires a big commitment from the audience, but could also produce an even bigger payoff.
Premieres September 24th on ABC.
1) "Community": This comedy series, which seems perfectly tailored for NBC's Thursday night comedy block, features Joel McHale (The Soup) as a lawyer who winds up back in college after the state bar deems his degree invalid. McHale received lots of practice in playing a smartass on The Soup, so his role in Community should come naturally. Chevy Chase joins the cast as a much-too-old student and John Oliver (The Daily Show) plays McHale's professor. And while some may feel this concept resembles Adam Sandler's "Billy Madison," the quirky cast and strong writing (reportedly in the vein of The Office and 30 Rock) should set this show apart as one of the best new comedies of the year.
Premieres September 17th on NBC.
