The Top 40 in review: #34 Recycled Percussion

In Season 3, there was the Cadence, and in Season 4, there is Recycled Percussion. The spirit, the comparison, and the drawbacks are all alike.

It’s obvious enough where Recycled Percussion’s inspirations are found, and inevitably they will be compared to one or both of them: Stomp and the Blue Man Group. Recycled Percussion has the athletics and the theatrics that these groups often employ, as did the Cadence. Unfortunately, they are more like the Cadence than their two professional predecessors in the sense that they lack a focus on the most important element of all.

That element is the music.

The group performed at the open call by using ladders as their percussion instruments, and the problem here is simple: though they struck the varying steps as if they were different instruments, the varying tones produced by the individual steps is almost negligible.

Theatrics alone will all this group to outperform anyone save the most forgettable or most painful of performers whom they will compete against in the first round. They are practically a shoe in for the Top 20, but this is owed more to the abysmal nature of some of their competitors as opposed to a statement in regards to their own talent.

Like the Cadence, this group will fall very short of expectations if they focus more on the way they are playing their instruments and less on the notes their instruments produce. The Cadence had hundreds of drums, but they all sounded alike. If the performers of Recycled Percussion believe they can get by following exactly in the footsteps of the Cadence, they are going to be very disappointed.
