When the list of the Top 40 acts categorized as they were was revealed, many of you may have been curious to know why Anthony & Matt were classified as a wild card. A wild card is, of course, an act that may just as well entertain as disappoint. Anthony & Matt fit this description well enough because their level of talent is completely out of balance.
On one hand is Anthony, the most exciting tap dancer AGT has seen since All That from the first season. Anthony has all the bases covered that AGT will expect of him: he is fast, exciting, precise, and his taps provide the very drum beat to the act itself. Anthony is a strong contender.
On the other hand, is Matt, the least talented guitarist and second least talented singer behind David Johnson. His guitar did not even sound in tune at the open call, and he sang at half the volume. Before Anthony began dancing, the audience could be heard getting ready to boo them.
In all fairness, Matt should have been given the same deal that was made to the Serenades: “Step down and we’ll consider putting your partner through.”
They are therefore a wild card act because whether or not they will succeed or fail with America depends entirely upon who the dominant personality in the group is. If Matt steps back and allows Anthony to have center stage, they should easily make it into the Top 20. If they share the stage, or worse, if Anthony tones his dancing down on Matt’s behalf, America may take them for a novelty act and cast their votes elsewhere.
