This article series is counting down the top 20 things learning professionals should be thankful for. Prior articles have counted down list items 20-16, 15-11, and 10-6. This article counts down the final five items. See if you agree. If not, please comment so that the person or item you, as a learning professional, are thankful for receives proper recognition.
5. Teachers – The saying goes, “behind every good man stands a good woman.” A good teacher stands behind both, devoting their lives to the development of minds and the sharing of knowledge.
4. Parents – If a great teacher stands behind every man and woman, then a parent stands behind all of them. The selflessness of parents is truly amazing. Everyone of us owe them or knowledge, our experiences, and – literally – our lives.
3. The US Government and Military – Without a system of government that encourages the free flow of information and a military that protects that system, learning could not incubate, expand, and become.
2. The human quest for knowledge – We are a curious bunch, and that quest for knowledge has lifted us all from cave dwellings to technological wonders. That quest for knowledge is what makes us us. Without it, learning could not happen.
1. The love of family – As Abraham Maslow so aptly demonstrated in his Hierarchy of Human Needs, without family, the pursuit of knowledge fades. We can strive for that knowledge because our needs for human contact, warmth, and comfort are met.
That’s this Examiner’s list. I have likely left out something you consider important. What would you add?
