The Top 20 in review: #06: The Fab Five

Of all the dance acts included in the Top 40 by the judges and included as wildcards by Simon Cowell, only two passed into the finals without the support of the judges: the combination breakdancer / contortionist Hairo Torres, and the Fab Five.

While there is no disputing that the Fab Five are talented, one still has to wonder if the Fab Five could have been as successful in any other round. Other equally talented dance groups such as FootworKINGz, Ishaara, U4ria, Breaksk8, Pyxie Mystere and SQ Entertainment, with the last group failing to surpass even Tony Hoard & Rory in the quarter finals.

The five sisters from Utah are talented, but so were all of their unfortunate competitors. It is therefore not unfair to question whether the Fab Five advanced less for their talent and more for their Utah origins.

When they performed in the quarter finals, the Fab Five made mention of their spoiler status in their introductions, but downplayed it for their performance. This is commendable, and going into a semifinal week that is jam packed full of spoiler acts, it could work to their advantage. They should be cautioned, however, that America is growing tired of dance acts, and with three of the four judges’ choices being additional dance acts, America may file away the two acts they previously had voted for in along with the judges’ choices as being incapable of winning and disregard them all completely.

The Fab Five are not the most untalented of the Top 20 contenders, but for this reason, they are one of the most at risk of elimination. With an overexposed entertainment medium and a highly unoriginal name for their group, the Fab Five need to do everything they possibly can to make sure they stand out (without being remembered for screwing up, of course).
