The Top 20 in review: #04: Drew Thomas Magic

Of all the many kinds of entertainers in the world, none have an uglier history on America’s Got Talent than magicians. Every season has been marked with a magician who appeared to have great potential to win but who would ultimately go on to bomb with America.

Drew Thomas is the first exception to the rule. Whether by reflecting upon his disappointing predecessors, or simply by luck, Drew Thomas became the first magicians in three seasons to make it out of the first round.

Unfortunately, Thomas’s greatest talent of all appears to be for dodging bullets.

It began at the open call where he delivered a performance that was nearly flawless with the exception of something fairly juvenile. Thomas’s “unique spin” on the trick involved having his assistant remain on stage with him instead of exiting the way he came. This did not necessarily betray the full nature of the trick, but it did narrow down the list of possibilities.

Thomas’s luck continued during the first round of quarter finals, where Thomas performed an illusion almost identical to one that had previously been demonstrated by Val Valentino on "Breaking the Magician's Code: Magic's Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed."

I remember that episode very well. I won’t publish an outright reveal, but I’ll give you a hint:

His performance is essentially two tricks rolled into one. Notice that all three of performers wearing welder’s masks all step behind the box that is supposed to be containing the three women at one time or another). As for Drew Thomas himself in that suspended exploding crate: Keep your eye on that big red tool chest. The voting display might get in the way of any chance of catching Thomas in the act, but you should still get the general idea.

It would have actually been to Thomas’s benefit if he had required the judges’ vote to put him through. Having passed through by America automatically, he may not be aware of just how much he had risked with that performance.

Drew Thomas is still very much a wild card. Just because he escaped without a hitch the first time does not mean he will the second.
