Last July, I started a two month series on the top 10 winningest programs since 2000 in all six Division I classifications and the top 5 in both division II classifications.
For the next month, we will be analyzing the flip side of winning programs, the top 10 losing programs since 2000 starting with Class 1A.
10. Nashville Christian Eagles
Record Since 2000- 48-77 (38.4%)
2011 Record- 5-7 (lost in 2nd round of playoffs)
Winless Regular Seasons- None
Losing Seasons Since 2000- 9 (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011)
Winning Seasons Since 2000- 2 (2000, 2010)
Best Record Since 2000- 9-3 in 2010 beat in 2nd round of playoffs
Last Winning Season- 9-3 in 2010
Playoff Appearances Since 2000- 3 (2000, 2010 and 2011)
Last Playoff Appearance- 2011
Longest Losing Streak Since 2000-13 in 2008-09 seasons
Analysis- The Eagles has a winning season in 2000 with an 8-4 record but after that they had seven of their next eight seasons were losing records.
Then in 2010, Jeff Brothers was hired to turn around the Eagles fortunes and He has the program on the up swing as they have made the second round of the playoffs in both 2010 and 2011 season.
The Eagles finished runner up in the region in 2010 and had a 9-3 record was the best record since going 9-4 in 1998.
9. Whitwell Tigers
Record Since 2000- 47-78 (37.6%)
2011 Record- 1-9
Winless Regular Seasons- None
Losing Seasons Since 2000- 9 (2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011)
Winning Seasons Since 2000
Best Record Since 2000- 8-4 in 2001(lost in 2nd round)
Last Winning Season- 7-4 in 2003 ( lost in 1st round)
Playoff Appearances Since 2000- 5 (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005)
Last Playoff Appearance- 2005 (lost in 1st round)
Longest Losing Streak Since 2000- 9 in 2009
Analysis-Stability has been the biggest problem for Whitwell as coach Billy Barnhart is the sixth Tiger coach in the last eight seasons.
The start of the new millennium saw Whitwell make five straight playoff appearances from 2001 until 2005 and the Tigers were 31-26 during that run.
But since 2006, the program has a dismal 16-52 record in six years and are coming off a 1-9 season.
8. Harriman Blue Devils
Record Since 2000- 47-83 (36.2%)
2011 Record 3-7
Winless Regular Seasons- 3 (2001, 2002, 2003)
Losing Seasons- 8 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2010, 2011)
Winning Seasons Since 2000- 3 (2005, 2006, 2009)
Best Record Since 2000- 8-4 in both 2005 and 2006 (lost in 2nd round of playoffs both years)
Last Winning Season- 7-5 in 2009 (lost in 2nd round)
Playoff Appearances Since 2000- 5 (2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010)
Last Playoff Appearance- 2010 (lost in 1st round)
Longest Losing Streak Since 2000- 31 games went 0-10 in 2001, 2002 and 2003
Analysis- Harriman started the 21st century on the wrong foot as they had a 5-45 record from 2000 until 2004.
That included losing 31 straight games and from 2002 until 2004.
But starting in 2005, Harriman finally started winning games going 42-37 and making five playoff appearances, too bad the decade started so rough for them.
7. Clay County Bulldogs
Record Since 2000- 44-78 (36%)
2011 Record- 3-7
Winless Regular Seasons- None
Losing Seasons Since 2000- 9 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011)
Winning Seasons Since 2000- 2 (2003, 2008)
Best Record Since 2000- 7-4 in both 2003 and 2008
Last Winning Season- 2008
Playoff Appearances Since 2000- 2 (2003 and 2008)
Last Playoff Appearance- 2008
Longest Losing Streak Since 2000- 9 in the 2000 and 2001.
Analysis- Clay County started the new millennium going 5-25 before going to the playoffs in 2003 and finishing the year 7-4.
Five years passed before the Bulldogs made the playoffs again this time under coach Dickie Brown who took Clay County to a 7-4 finish in 2008.
Since that playoff appearance, the Bulldogs have gone 11-19 with a playoff appearance.
6. Greenfield Yellow Jackets
Record Since 2000- 43-80 (35%)
2011 Record- 0-10
Winless Regular Seasons- 1 (2010)
Losing Seasons Since 2000- 9 (2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 201)
Winning Seasons Since 2000
Best Record Since 2000- 9-3 in 2001 (lost in 2nd round)
Last Winning Season- 2002 (lost in 1st round of playoffs)
Playoff Appearances Since 2000- 3 (2001, 2002 and 2003)
Last Playoff Appearance- 2003 (lost in 1st round of playoffs)
Longest Losing Streak Since 2000- 11in 2010-2011.
Analysis- Don Pitt, the new Greenfield coach and alumnus will have a tall order in front of him in the 2012 season as the Yellow Jackets are coming off a 0-10 campaign.
It has been nine years since the Yellow Jackets had a winning record and made a trip to the playoffs and Pitt will try to get them back there in his first year.
Since a 9-3 record in 2001, the Yellow Jackets have posted a 32-70 record.
5. Gleason Bulldogs
Record Since 2000- 42-86 (32.8%)
2011 Record- 6-6 (lost in 2nd round of playoffs)
Winless Regular Seasons Since 2000- 2 (2001, 2003)
Losing Seasons Since 2000- 8 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010)
Winning Seasons Since 2000- 2 (2007 and 2009)
Best Record Since 2000- 7-4 in 2007
Last Winning Season- 2009
Playoff Appearances Since 2000- 6 (2000, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011)
Last Playoff Appearance- 2011
Longest Losing Streak Since 2000-18 in 2003 and 2004 seasons
Analysis- Gleason started the decade slow going 13-59 from 2000 to 2006 until they broke through and had a 7-4 year in 2007.
Gleason went winless in both 2001 and 2003 which didn't help the overall record.
Since 2007, the Bulldog program has a 29-27 record and have made four playoff appearances in five seasons.
4. Halls Tigers
Record Since 2000- 34-92 (26.9%)
2011 Record- 3-7
Winless Regular Seasons- None
Losing Seasons Since 2000- 12 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011)
Winning Seasons Since 2000- None
Best Record Since 2000- 5-6 in both 2003 and 2008
Last Winning Season-None
Playoff Appearances Since 2000- 6 (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008)
Last Playoff Appearance- 2008 (lost in 1st round)
Longest Losing Streak Since 2000- 8 in 2010
Analysis- The good news for Halls is they have made six playoff appearances in the last 12 years.
The bad news for the Tigers is the best record they could muster in those appearances was a 5-6 record.
Halls doesn't have winning record in the last 12 years in fact you would to go back to the 1995-96 seasons when they went 5-5 both years to found anything close to a .500 record
3. Cornersville Bulldogs
Record Since 2000- 29-94 (23.5%)
2011 Record- 2-8
Winless Regular Seasons- 3 (2001, 2003 and 2004)
Losing Seasons Since 2000- 12 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011)
Winning Seasons Since 2000- None
Best Record Since 2000- 5-6 in both 2007 and 2009
Last Winning Season- 1994, went 7-4
Playoff Appearances Since 2000- 2 (2009 and 2010)
Last Playoff Appearance- 2010 (lost in 1st round)
Longest Losing Streak Since 2000- 22 from 2002 to 2004
Analysis- Cornersville was 8-52 in the first six years of the 21st century and the Bulldogs improve to 21-42 over the last six years.
Despite the 21-42 record in the last six years, Cornersville have made two playoff appearances in back to back years 2009 and 2010.
2. Oakdale Eagles
Record Since 2000- 18-102 (15%)
2011 Record- 2-8
Winless Regular Seasons Since 2000- 3 (2006, 2007 and 2009)
Losing Seasons Since 2000-12 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011)
Winning Seasons Since 2000-None
Best Record Since 2000- 3-7 in 2000
Last Winning Season-1993, went 7-4
Playoff Appearances Since 2000- None
Last Playoff Appearance- 1996 (lost in 1st round)
Longest Losing Streak Since 2000- 22from 2005 to 2007
Analysis- Oakdale had a 22 and a 13 game losing streak in the last 12 years and have had seven seasons in which the program has went 2-8 on the year.
Follow that up with three winless regular seasons and the Eagles have had 12 year streak to forget.
The last winning record for Oakdale was all the way back in 1994 when they went 7-4.
1. Red Boiling Springs Bulldogs
Record Since 2000- 11-109 (9.2%)
2011 Record- 2-8
Winless Regular Seasons-7 (2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008.)
Losing Seasons-12 (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011)
Winning Seasons Since 2000- None
Best Record Since 2000- 3-7 in 2001
Last Winning Season-Never had one in school history.
Playoff Appearances Since 2000- None
Last Playoff Appearance- Never qualified for playoffs
Longest Losing Streak Since 2000- 61 from 2002 to 2008
Analysis- The Bulldogs are number one for all the wrong reasons and have only 11 wins in 12 seasons.
RBS have never made the playoffs and had the nation's longest losing streak at 61 games dating back to 2003 until 2008.
Before that the Bulldogs lost 60 games in a row between the years of 1987 to 1992.
RBS for the last three years have started 2-0 and are making strides under young coach Kyle Shoulders who has brought toughness and accountability to the program.
