“If this Saturday’s fight with Marquez didn’t convince Floyd to fight Pacman, then nothing else will,” exclaimed Dave the Barber instead of a greeting as I parked my behind on a chair at his fine barbershop on San Fernando Road.
“That’s exactly what I’ve been telling you all along,” cried out Downtown Ronnie Brown:” Marquez took that boy to school. That was a thing of beauty. If you looked at his feet, he just kept turning to the left all the time so that Pacquiao could not set up his offence. Like a skilled dancer, he just kept turning and turning. He just said to himself you can hit me with anything else, but you are not going to hit me with that left hand again. And then he fired back combos with a precision of surgeon. To make a long story short, Pacquiao just can’t deal with a counter puncher and if he had so much trouble with the aging Marquez imagine what Floyd is going to do to him in the ring. And if your imagination is not so good, because you are too old, I will break it down to you. Floyd will make Manny miss for a while, while shooting a sharp right counter, his signature punch, and then when Manny really gets frustrated and confused, he will break him down and knock him out. Case closed.”
“Have you been eating those magic mushrooms again?” inquired Al the Barber:” When was the last time Floyd knocked anybody out? And don’t bring up Ortiz. That was a cheap shot. I don’t care if it was legal; you got to be a sportsman, otherwise go fight on the streets. Oh, I forgot, they don’t pay for that. Anyways, the only guy Floyd knocked out lately was Ricky Hatton, but you can’t compare Ricky to Manny. As a matter of fact Manny knocked out Ricky in two rounds. That was brutal. I thought that British boy would never wake up.”
“Are you going to cry that Marquez got robbed?” cut in Big Steve addressing Downtown, Ronnie Brown:” Because I don’t want to hear it. In the old days you had to beat up the champ to win and you can’t really do that backing up all day long, Can you?”
“Please, don’t interrupt me,” snapped Al the Barber:” I am too old to keep thoughts in my head for long. What I was trying to say is that styles make fights and I would really like to see how Manny’s and Floyd’s styles mesh up together in the ring. It’s like a perfect Superbowl; all offence against all American defense. Hell, what I would really like to see is Manny go all out and drop and hurt that cocky American boy and then really see what Floyd is made off.”
“I am afraid that won’t be possible,” replied Dave the Barber:” If Manny comes in anything close to what he looked like on Saturday against Marquez, Floyd will run circles around him. Manny will never hit him. It will not even be close; unless it’s just Marquez who’s got Manny’s number. But if I was Pacquaio, I would be in no rush to call out Floyd right now.”
“No rush!” cried out Big Steve:” What do you want to do, wait till they are both in rocking chairs? No, no and no. The time has come. It’s now or never. They have to fight next or it could be too late. New and young guns are coming up and Manny and Floyd are no spring chickens. Has Manny reached his peak? And how long can Floyd stay on top being a part time fighter? The time is now.”
“You should do a jingle for that fight- The time has come: Pacquiao vs. Mayweather,” said Ronnie Brown:” But to answer your question, Marquez did get robbed. He took Manny to school, but when the school was out he had nothing to show for it except moral victory in the eyes of public opinion.
But let’s get back to Pretty Boy, Floyd. I recently heard an interview where Pacquiao’s promoter, uncle Bob said that Floyd knows boxing and on that note Floyd is not anxious to face Pacquiao, because Manny’s style would give him all kinds of problems. I would have to disagree with that. Now Floyd Jr. does know boxing and if he has any kind of common sense left he should say – Forget the test, let’s get it on.”
