It still stands as a magnificent work of art here in the Forest Hills section of Newark, New Jersey. The Tiffany Silver Factory was built in 1897 and nicknamed, “The Castle” due to its striking appearance. At this facility the finest silver plates and dinnerware were made. The factory was the first in the world that had its machinery function through electric power. In 1985, the factory closed, but it is now a condominium complex that is still well preserved.
Charles Lewis Tiffany was the founder of Tiffany and Co, a company that is highly successful and still in business today. Tiffany borrowed $500.00 to open his first store in New York with John Young, his business partner, in the fall of 1837. Even though, it was a time of economic turmoil, Tiffany still pursued his dream and succeeded. At his small store, he sold jewelry, silverware and stationery.
Passion defined Tiffany’s success, for he truly loved his job. He had such a strong work ethic that he walked to work during the blizzard of 1888; his 600 employees also walked as well. Since he was so enthusiastic and energetic, Tiffany motivated his employees to follow his standard of excellence by providing quality products to consumers. Throughout his entire life, Tiffany remained passionate about his work; he worked till the age of 90.
Since Tiffany merchandise had such a high quality, dignitaries throughout the world bought Tiffany goods. The following presidents of the United States were Tiffany customers: Cleveland, Johnson, Kennedy and Nixon. Even today, Tiffany and Co. continues to provide legendary service to all its customers.
The iconic Tiffany tower that is seen from a distance in Forest Hills is like a beacon of light shining into the city of Newark. The fact that the best silverware and dinnerware was made in Newark adds to our rich cultural heritage.
