The Things We Learned at the Good Food Festival's Open Symposium

Only an hour in on Friday to the Festival and we have learned quite a bit about how much local food and sustainable changes are taking place right now in Chicago Public Schools, Midway Airport, the McCormick Place and more.

Growing Power

They started in Milwaukee, WI by Will Allen in 1993, this organization's goal is to provide healthy and affordable food to communities through programs like their technical training initiatives

Leslie Fowler

Chicago Public Schools (CPS)

They serve 75 million meals a year with $98 million dollars or $1.30/meal; Leslie is working with other schools to start bringing in more local and healthy food while becoming a large purchasing group

Chartswell Thompson Hospitality

They serve CPS schools and is trying to bring them more local food as well as educate kids more on food

McCormick Place

They are growing tomatoes on their rooftop and partnering with green groups to better their recycling efforts including recycling 100% of their cooking oil; Their goal is to become the most sustainable conventional center in the US. They are already the biggest!

They compost organic waste from 16 of their 24 restaurants!
