The Terrapins men’s soccer team is No. 2 on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Men’s National Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday, August 12th. Indiana, the defending national champs, is No. 1 on the poll. Georgetown, North Carolina and Connecticut round out the poll’s top five at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
At the end of the 2012 season, after becoming both the ACC’s regular season and tournament champs, the Terps played in the College Cup in Hoover, Alabama. They were eliminated in the semifinals, losing to Georgetown in penalty kicks.
Following the heart-breaking loss, Head Coach Sasho Cirovski and the Terps, which led the nation last season in winning percentage, finished the season with an impressive 20-1-3 record.
The Terps are returning 8 starters including last season’s MAC Hermann Trophy winner Patrick Mullins. Awarded annually to the top male and female college soccer players in the United States, the trophy is the Heisman Trophy of college soccer. Past winners of the prestigious trophy include the great Alexi Lalas and Mia Hamm.
Last season, Mullins, who was the ACC’s Offensive Player of the Year, the ACC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America First Team All American, led the Terps in scoring and assists, scoring a total of 17 goals and producing a total of 10 assists.
Mullins, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, turned down a contract from the MLS in order to return to Maryland for his senior year.
