Forbes Magazine has come up with a list of the ten most miserable cities in America. To come up with the dubious list, the magazine says it evaluated the 200 largest metropolitan areas and divisions in the United States based on the well-known Misery Index which was developed by Arthur Okun, an economist, as well as their own twist on what makes a city miserable.

Okun combined unemployment and inflation in his formula for defining ‘misery’ while Forbes added such factors as taxes, violent crime, political corruption, unemployment rates, and foreclosures and house prices. Beyond that, they looked at individual miseries for people like their personal commute times to and from work, the weather in their area, and even how the city’s pro sports teams have done recently.
