It is this time of year that I often reflect with somber reverence of all those yesteryears of my youth. Those Christmas's where our family tree glistened with colorful lights and the tinsel was carefully placed hanging down bringing joy and gayety to all those wondrous evenings of long ago. I grew up knowing that Christmas was a most holy of celebrations but also as a child we all knew this time of the year meant Santa Claus, Elves, and the North Pole. Presents so carefully wrapped placed with so much care under the tree where stockings were hung so perfectly on the fireplace mantle all bring together those most precious memories I still reminisce about today.
So much has changed in the years that have gone by. The reality is as though I have been transported into a completely different world so foreign to the one of my youth. A journey of a lifetime to far off places only to return to an unrecognizable home. More foreign than those lands that were so far away have made me aware of just how influential the memories of my youth were in the actions I have taken in latter years. Those memories carried me through many adverse times. But, there are now tell tale signs of things to come more sobering that bring somber reflections of a time long ago.
A new year is fast approaching and yet there will remain un uncertainty for millions. Transfixed in a world so hostile, so void of compassion, waiting for the benevolencey of the powers that be. Waiting but never quite able to grasp the rational that keeps too many children from fulfilling a childhood free from want or need. Those tell tale signs are all too evident today. Future generations of Americans are constantly being subjected to unrelenting assaults day after day. Either by the horrific carnage in all these school shootings now an almost weekly occurrence or by the vary nature of our evolving society has only increased the incidences of school bullying where again too many children continue to suffer.
For the youth of this nation questions must be asked and answers forthcoming. But, all too often those we have entrusted to answer the calling have continually circumvented the issues and have skirted around the answers that would solve the many crisis of our times. Not only our so many of our children denied the opportunities to create lasting memories, like the memories that I hold dear, but far too many American adults as well have yet the opportunities to create for themselves lasting memories that would make living in this period of time a joy to behold.
There are so many tell tale signs that have all indicated that this coming year even with mid term elections this coming November will not bring the change that is needed to undue the ever increasing undercurrent of animosity, frustration and mistrust that has permeated from the powers that be in state houses and Washington for far too long. Meanwhile we the hapless electorate have been witness to the callous and disingenuous policies from our leaders of state for years. For millions of Americans have only continued to suffer the consequences of their actions and inactions that have exasperated the dire living conditions so many continue to live in.
With the current budget deal finally reaching a stage where it will be passed have left so many Americans literally out in the cold. A lump of coal is all that is offered. Our veterans and our seniors are feeling the harsh bitter cold winter wind of budget cuts this season. There will be not joy for many in the year ahead. It is as though our most benevolent members of state have taken Ebenezer Scrooge's concepts to heart. With this budget bill and the past sequester budget cuts in full force have undermined the stability of once great country. Practically every economist around have a very dismal view of the rational and the purpose of all this legislation that completely misses the boat in solving the financial and economic crisis that continues to drain the lifeblood right out of the United States.
The ineptness of government is so apparent today. From the current flood insurance rates that have continued to soar at unprecedented highs. to the preparedness of emergency contingency plans in the event of major disasters like Hurricane Katrina. The subtle increases that keep occurring in everything that is needed to live today like, food or electricity have made what ever disposable incomes practically disappear. That's not to say the recent increase in Social security cost of living adjustment allocated by our most wondrous leaders of state have then reduced the food stamp allotments by the same amount. Example: a person receiving previously $700 a month with that cost of living increase now will receive $710 meanwhile that same person was receiving $106 in food stamps will now receive just $96 a month. As we all are aware the cost of food has risen by more than 5 times the percentage of the cost of living increase in everyone's Social Security. In actuality all are seniors have yet to be beneficiaries of our most astute legislatures legislation. The only ones that have benefited from legislation for the past 35 years are the 1%. Interesting enough is the fact that the number of Americans that have gotten wealthier compared with those who got poorer shows a complete distortion of balance between the two. When one climbs up the income mobility ladder there are four that slide down. Not only that there are millions more that can't and won't ever reach that ladder of mobility at all.
Tell tale signs have all pointed to a very disturbing trend that is the undercurrent in which enables this country to move further away from having the balance in our society. A balance that produces harmony, stability, security and prosperity for all and not just the top 1% either. The question that needs direct answer is how to change the direction this country is headed. It really starts with each and everyone of us. But, as long as our political process continues to be so corrupted their is little chance our elected officials will ever see the way out of the fog that has closed in around. The fog of discontent, and disenchantment in living in a country that has turned it's back on so many.
