The Tej Kohli Foundation – Lifting The Burden Of Poverty

The heavy burden of poverty breaks and cripples the spirit as well as the body. Recent research presented by UNICEF indicates that one out of every three malnourished children worldwide live in India. Greater than 42 percent of young children less than 5 years old are severely underweight and malnourished. Growth rate and mental as well as physical development were severely stunted in more than 58 percent of these children.

UNICEF further reports, “Children living in poverty experience deprivation of the material, spiritual and emotional resources needed to survive, develop and thrive, leaving them unable to enjoy their rights, achieve their full potential or participate as full and equal members of society.”

India born billionaire businessman Tej Kohli grew up very aware of the poverty in his home county and as a boy, vowed to do what he could to help. He kept that promise.

Motivated by a compassionate heart and a sincere desire to help make the world a better place Mr. Kohli established the Tej Kohli Foundation, a non-profit charity headquartered in Guragaon, India in 2005. Funded solely by Mr. Tej Kohli, the Foundation helps to improve the lives millions of persons around the world.

The charitable efforts of the foundation are focused primarily in Costa Rica and in India where the World Health Organization (WHO) reports 51 or 844 million of the world’s poorest people live. The National Statistics and Census Institute further reports that in Costa Rica, with a population of more than 4 million, one-fifth of the people live in extreme poverty.

The foundation endeavors to offer healthcare to rural residents, paying special attention to the health of women and children. Working with village councils and health care activists, the Foundation strives to provide sanitation, clean water, nutritional support and education including supporting charities that provide pre-school facilities and providing mentoring and financial support to underprivileged students to enable them to participate in institutions of higher learning.

The Tej Kohli Foundation notes, “Kohli is an international businessman and philanthropist, with a diverse portfolio of commercial and charitable operations in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and India. His business interests range from e-commerce and IT, to real estate and reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. The innovative programs of the Tej Kohli Foundation are comprised of passionate people committed to addressing the critical needs of young people in India, Costa Rica and beyond. By inspiring communities, states and nations, by motivating individuals and institutions, by supporting local leaders with programs and facilities at community level, we will make a difference in the lives of millions of children.”

Mr. Kohli states, “One of the aims of the Tej Kohli Foundation, and something I hold very dear, is to nurture the age-old traditions of charity, and social help. I want every person with whom I come into contact, whether they are students at the Foundation or senior executives in my businesses, to understand the purpose and position of philanthropy and social responsibility in the 21st century. Success should not be achieved – or celebrated – in isolation.”
