Founded and managed by India born billionaire businessman Tej Kohli, the Tej Kohli Foundation is an autonomous non-profit organization striving to make the world a better place for children born into extreme poverty. Established in 2005, the foundation is entirely funded by Mr. Kohli.
Motivated by the spirit of assisting others, the foundation, headquartered in San Jose, Costa Rica, brings hope, help and healing to thousands of people worldwide. With efforts mainly focused in Costa Rica and India, the foundation endeavors to alleviate poverty by providing shelter, clothing, food, sanitation, medicine and education.
The need for charitable intervention is so great in both India and Costa Rica. India, the world’s most impoverished country is home to 844 million or 51 percent of the world’s poorest people. In Costa Rica, with a population 4,133,882, greater than a fourth of the population lives in extreme poverty.
The foundations stated goals include; nutrition for malnourished children, education for needy children, vocational education for people with disabilities, rural health care and the empowerment of women. Mr. Kohli noted, “We carefully chose the areas of action where we can satisfy basic needs of the families and make a difference. Each year, we strive to broaden the capacity of the foundation to include more people.”
Diverse and far-reaching, the Tej Kohli Foundation’s community involvement initiatives are targeted toward bringing people together in a spirit of community service including:
- Improving the availability of education
- Encouraging financial literacy
- Promoting employee philanthropy
- Community partnerships
- Supporting small businesses
- To support, fund and promote corneal transplants in India to alleviate corneal blindness.
Although the Tej Kohli Foundation is entirely self-funded, they are continually working to raise awareness of activities in order to increase the availability of practical support.
