"The Taste" and National Pancake Day (Photos)

The Taste” debuted on ABC, Jan. 22nd, 2013. Two culinary superstars, Nigella Lawson and Anthony Bourdain make up two of the judges' panel. The judges' panel also consists of two other people that I never heard of until this show, Ludo Lefebvre and Brian Malarkey.

The main theme of the show is: One taste determines who goes through to work in one of the judges' kitchens and ultimately win. The twist is that the judges don't see the contestant beforehand or talk to them at all, until after the one taste each is completed by all four. The contestants are in a dark, enclosed booth while the tasting's going on; they can't see the judges nor vice versa until after the tasting's done (but the contestants can definitely hear the judges' comments!). Just before the taste test, the contestants are allowed so much time in a studio kitchen to put their self-selected entry together.

So far, practically all of the meals have been things that I've never heard of (nor most people) or concoctions that I (nor most people) would ever think of putting together (Dijon chicken, mustard and mashed potatoes?).

Episode 2 aired on Tuesday, Jan. 29th, 2013 at 8 pm. and was a continuation of auditions for the culinary aspirants.

“The Taste” is somewhat interesting, but I think it'll pick up once they get the now four contestant teams working together in the judges' kitchens. The basic premise will stay the same, all coming down to that one taste.

But, because it's done “blindly”, the four judges still won't know who made what meal, until they already decide and vote on it (which means that they could unknowingly get rid of someone on their own team!).

It's not a great show, but it's intriguing; I'll hang around for a while.
