The symbolic meaning of a dragonfly

Dragonfly close-up

A dragonfly landed on a cell phone at a recent soccer game. It inspired a search into the symbolism surrounding this small, but fascinating creature.

First of all, the symbolic meanings mentioned in this article are partly associated with both Asian (Japanese) and Native American (Plains region) beliefs.  They say that as a creature of the wind, a dragonfly represents change. Its wings are sensitve to slight breezes, so we too should heed where the wind blows us in life.

Dragonflies also live near water, which in and of itself is symbolic of the subconscious mind.  Dragonflies symbolically carry a message dealing with deeper thought, reminding us to pay attention to our own deeper thoughts and desires.

Finally, a dragonfly lives a short life, so it must live life to the fullest.

Keeping these thoughts in mind as one progresses through life may be a source of focus for meditation, improving one's life choices in the process.

Because they are born in water, and then fly, i always relate to them as transformation. They're also a great reminder to me that my mother is still around.

Like your thoughts on what they represent, but as we pay attention to our own deep thughts and desires, and live life to the fullest ( with which I wholeheartedly agree), we need to remember, God made both of us creatures for a reason, and to include that as a basis in our mediation. Thanks for a beautifuly illustrated article.

My children threw my husband and me an incredible 25th anniversary party. About an hour into the party there were 10 to 15 dragon flies over the pool in the yard where the party was being held. It was an incredibel testament to the love between me and my husband which has certainly evolved over the past 25 years. ( 32 if you count the years we dated before marriage). I had to look into the symbolism of the dragon fly and it rings true to the emotion of the day.

MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY IN 2005. LEAVING BEHIND MYSELF AND MY THREE SONS. WE HAD JUST MOVED ACROSS PROVINCE. AFTER THE FUNERAL AND RETURNING HOME, I RECIEVED A PACKAGE FROM AN AQUAINTANCE. IN IT WAS A STORY ABOUT DEATH USING DRAGONFLIES AND WATERBUGS. IT IS A FAMOUS STORY, AND IT WAS TO HELP MY SONS AS WELL. I TUCKED IT AWAY IN THE DRAWER WHERE I KEPT SOME OF MY LATE HUSBANDS THINGS. ONE DAY WHILE THE BOYS WERE IN SCHOOL I WAS PARTICULARLY SAD. I DECIDED TO GO THROUGH THE DRAWER, AS I OPENED THE DRAWER, WHICH USED TO BE MY HUSBANDS, THERE LIE A DRAGONFLY. THIS WAS NOVEMBER. THE DRAGON FLY WAS DEAD, BUT WAS BEAUTIFUL AND SHIMMERING.I PULLED OUT THAT FOLDER AND REREAD THAT STORY. MY HUSBAND WAS GIVING US A MESSAGE. SINCE THEN WE FIND DRAGONFLIES EVERYWHERE.

As my father lay ill on life support in the hospital a women came to my mother with a pin of a dragonfly. She said a dragonfly will come to her at her loneliest moments and it will provide her and my family strength. My father passed away shortly after this visit with my mother. At the funeral and cemetary close to the tomb where my father lays to rest flew in a dragonfly. The dragonfly laid still and perfect near his tomb during the duration of the ceremony. Immediatly following the ceremony, the dragonfly flew to my neices and flew in circles as if it were him playing with them. It's only been about a week since his passing, but everytime I go to the cemetary a dragonfly appears. The cemetary isn't close to any water and the weather is beginning to get much chillier in NY. I believe this is a symbol of my father and the strength that he's given me during this difficult time. For all who have lost a loved one, know that true inspiration comes in many forms like a dragonfly.

Twice now, two years apart, I have had a Dragonfly land on me. Both times while at a PowWow. The first landed on my right hand while I had them both open to receive the spirit during the Elder's prayer to the Creator. The second landed on my chest, directly over my heart, while I was sitting back watching traditional dance and enjoying the spirit of the day. Each time I had a sense that the Dragonfly was comfortable where it was. I feel truly blessed yet wonder at the meaning of having been visited this way. I'm not particularly religious, yet open to all spiritualism.
    Any thoughts?

A dragonfly flew into my room today. I'm adding one extra day to my artists retreat before moving on to my next retreat. Walking home from dinner another dragon fly circled around me kind of escorting me back to my room. Naturally, I looked it up to discover it's meaning. Delighted to learn that it represents change, maturity, transformation and strength.

I am a born again believer in Jesus Christ. I raised a daughter who had been afflicted with siezures and severe mental and physical disabilities for 21 years. She suffered silently because she didn't talk, she suffered emotionally because she couldn't walk. One morning the Lord called her home, and although I knew she was finally free from her affliction, my heart wasn't ready to let her go. I was an emotional wreck, and understandably so, I was not aware of my surroundings during the funeral proceedings. But all the family members at the burial talked about a sudden swarm of Dragonflys all around and in the midst of us (huge in size like mockingbirds and full of colors). I asked "You mean like 10 or 20 of them?" They made a surprised face and said "No!... More like hundreds of them, all around us." They did not bother anybody and no one was afraid because all they were doing was hovering over us. I was told that a swarm would only exist around water and there was a drought this Texas summer. It hadn't rained in over 100 days and there wasn't any water around us for miles. I read its meaning and I now believe that it was God's way of telling me that he has freed my daughter from her bonds, and has transformed her to a mature and heavenly body as his Angels. And she is now free to do more than she could ever do. I still cry because I miss her so much, but I know she is in heaven being entertained by the Angels until I see her again.
