This Texan singer may not be a household name, but she has opened for several well known acts, including the Counting Crows, Kenny Loggins and tonight here in Chicago, she is opening for the Gin Blossoms. And when you listen to her, you'll understand why.
McGuinness' music combines elements from rock and country, which makes her songs catchy and upbeat, yet they tell stories about people making it through hard times. Her music is very positive. All of her songs have a uplifting message about making it another day or just having a good time and not sweating the small stuff. But even if this isn't your type of music, McGuinness is worth a listen because of her sultry voice.
She has a powerful voice. It may not be the most powerful or overwhelming voice in music, but it definitely has an effect on the listener. Her voice can be very mellow and sweet, like in her song “Miss Moonlight” or it can takeover the entire song, like in “ In the Next life.” There are a few songs that do not give her voice justice, such as the opening track “Always Something to Believe In.” In this track, the music and her singing just never seem to match up very well. But “Miss Moonlight” gives her a chance to show off her talent and she does a great job with it.
And speaking of “Miss Moonlight,” it is probably the best song on the album. There is a mellow guitar riff intro that really sets the mood for the song. When listening to it you may even think of being out at night underneath the stars. After about a minute, Malea's voice comes in very smoothly, never breaking that mood.
