This Friday night the party will be upstairs at Smith’s Olde Bar as the Sundogs and Dirty Souls show Atlanta how to rock. Both bands deliver guitar heavy rock tunes loaded with the flavors of the Stones, Beatles and Tom Petty. Speaking of Petty, the Sundogs will be paying homage to the great one with a set list that covers Mr. Petty’s storied career.
The Sundogs are veterans of the Atlanta rock scene treating fans to their jangly guitar rock for quite some time. Wearing their influences on their sleeve as you listen to their music it is almost impossible to not hear traces of said influences. The music is original but sounds oh so familiar. Will Haraway says Petty’s music has always been an inspiration for the band, “ it fits us, we have the same personnel, adore Telecasters and love to do the big harmony parts and short, dramatic solos that are such a big part of the Heartbreakers' sound”. The Sundogs have always mixed a Petty tune into their sets so it seemed natural to do a night of his music. Friday night they will start off with a short set of originals, focusing on some newer tunes before breaking into their ode to Petty. Look for songs running the entire gamut of his career. They even have Mimi Thomas there to belt out Stevie Nicks’ parts. Don’t expect just the hits, they will delve into the b-sides and may even have a Christmas surprise for everyone. Don’t look for a karaoke style show, the Sundogs will put their own stank on the songs which should make the night even better.
Setting the table for the evening will be fellow local band the Dirty Souls. These dudes put on one of the best live shows you can treat yourself to. They play loud and fast with just enough fuzz to keep it interesting. Look for an all out auditory assault as they roll through a batch of original tunes, some old some new but all damn good. Their music pulls from the garage rock sounds of the 60’s and 70’s with an infusion of bluesy swagger. “Lee and I saw them open for Glossary a couple of years ago and have been trying to get them on a bill with us ever since” – Will Haraway. The Dirty Souls are the perfect pairing for the Sundogs.
So get off your assess and find your way to Smith’s Olde Bar. Grab a cold beverage and get ready to rock out to the tunes of Tom Petty. Why do a Tom Petty show? “People seem to love it, and as long as they do, we'll keep doing it. It's a helluva fun way to end out the year, that's for sure. It's our Christmas Present to Atlanta.” – Will Haraway. Like always, if you see me there, say hi.
