The Sunday Funnies: M&M’s Super Bowl commercial mixes sugar with spice

Welcome to another edition of The Sunday Funnies, a weekly feature devoted solely to the lighter side of life. This week’s edition features one of the funniest 2012 Super Bowl commercials, the M&M’s spot called “Just My Shell.” Somehow, Mars managed to successfully mix sugar with spice and came up with a huge hit that kids and parents in Atlanta adored.

For decades, the brown M&M has been frowned upon for being the dullest of all colors. Well, not any more, thanks to Mrs. Brown, the new M&M on the block that was introduced during the 2012 Super Bowl. The candy with an attitude made families across America laugh out loud for her candor and boldness. In fact, the M&M’s Super Bowl commercial was such a huge hit that close to 14 million people have re-watched the humorous spot on YouTube.

Parents in Atlanta loved the commercial because of its good, clean humor. It wasn’t too racy for kids, but was just edgy enough to catch their attention. Ten-year-old David Tyler from Tucker says of the spot, “I think it was the funniest Super Bowl commercial of them all. I love M&M’s and it made me want to eat more of them.” Mom Susanna agrees with her son and adds, “I thought the David Beckham and Teleflora ads were too racy for the Super Bowl. The M&M’s commercial was just right for a family audience.”

Advertising experts agreed and rated the M&M’s commercial as one of the best in 2012. Ad executive Peter Daboll, CEO of Ace Matrix told CSP.net, “The two top ads from M&M's and Doritos used humor to achieve high likeability and attention scores, as well as top scores in relevance and desire. They also had broad demographic appeal, a key consideration for an audience as large and diverse as the Super Bowl."

Parents and kids in Atlanta couldn’t agree more. To re-watch the M&M’s 2012 Super Bowl commercial, click on the video to the left.

Best wishes for a relaxing and peaceful Sunday.
