The Sunday Funnies: Darth Vader commercial boosts Halloween costume sales

Welcome to another edition of The Sunday Funnies, a weekly feature devoted solely to the lighter side of life. This week’s edition features the still-popular TV star Max Page, star of the Star Wars Volkswagen Super Bowl commercial, and his influence on Halloween 2011.

Max Page was the six-year-old who became an overnight sensation last February after appearing in the Super Bowl Volkswagen commercial that was dubbed “The Force.” The advertising spot was so huge that it garnered over 21 million views on YouTube after airing during Super Bowl XLV.

The commercial’s message was simple, yet very powerful, without relying on gimmicks or over-the-top special effects. When Little Darth Vader summoned up “The Force” to start the family car, the end result was funny and touching, especially for parents. In fact, the Volkswagen Super Bowl commercial was the most talked about ad around water coolers across America.

After appearing in the commercial, young Max Page became a star in his own right. He appeared with his mother on the Today Show and CNN. “This is out of the world. I can’t even keep up with the messages and calls," mom Jennifer Page told Matt Lauer.

As a result of the Super Bowl Volkswagen commercial, the Darth Vader costume is very popular this Halloween. The manager of a Party City in North Atlanta said…

There’s still two weeks until Halloween, but we can’t keep the Darth Vader costume in stock. It’s been incredibly popular this year.

For parents hoping to score a Darth Vader costume for their kids this Halloween, on-line shopping may be the best bet. Buy Costumes.com still has a supply of Darth Vader costumes for kids in sizes small, medium and large.

Other popular Halloween costumes for 2011 include monster stars from the Internet game and TV show Monster High. For adults, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Dog the Bounty Hunter, and Taylor Swift costumes are in demand.
